Group Wednesday
A look Into Japan was taken by
members of the Wednesday Study
club at thla woek'a meeting. Members
Invited Mlsa Josephine Kirtley to tell
tiicm of her sojourn In Nippon dur
ing the past aummer and arranged
a program of appropriate featurea to
supplement Mlsa KJrtley's talk.
Current eventa were brought to the
group by Mra. C. W. Janes. Mrs. M.
M Morris reviewed "Beauty In Japan"
by Samuel H. Walnwrlght, Jr. The
author, Mra. Morrla pointed out. waa
born In Japan and learned the lan
guage along with hla native tongue.
Hla knowledge and understanding
of Japan and her people, combined
with a gift of expression, make the
book very worthwhile, according to
Mra. Morrla. The work contains 300
.lustrations drawn by the author
which were used by Mra. Morris In
her review.
Miss Kirtley, who waa a guest of
the Japanese government during her
slay there last atimmer, exhibited a
large number of artlclea from her
collection, which her listeners found
peculiar In their traditions, art,
handiwork and other characteristics.
The apeaker stated that the first
thing that attracted her attention
waa the tremendous Industrlouaness
of the people, the characteristic ex
tending even to small children.
Japaneae people, Mlsa Kirtley re
lated, are hard working and painstak
ing in everything they do. In addi
tion, ahe ald, they are most gracious
hosts, leaving nothing undone for
her pleasure while there.

Approximately 200 "delegates were
present at the district convention of
Rebekah lodges held last Saturday
In Centra Point, when Mrs. Stella
Weed of Portland, president of the
Oregon assembly, made her official
visit to the group.

Among the people who have recent
ly come to Medford to establish their
permanent home In this locality are
two who are nationally and Interna
tionally prominent as authors, world
travelers and lecturers. They .sre Mr.
and Mrs. Worth Smith who are now

Both Mr. and Mrs. Smith are authors,
Mra. Smith being widely known un
der her nom de plume of Genevieve
Behrend.
Mra. Smith, a native of Paris,
Fiance, waa educated abroad. When
a young woman ahe studied privately

Thorn a Troward of Cornwall. Eng
land, famous metaphysician and
author. She then came to New York
oity and founded the School of the
Builders, which Institution she di
rected for ten yeara. In 1920 she
founded a like institution In Loa
Angeles, and for the past six yeara
ha traveled Into every state In the
union, lecturing. Mrs. Smith Is the
author of tour popular books and
la known a well a a radlo-artlst,
lecturer, educator and metaphysician.
Worth Smith Is considered a lead
ing authority on the Great Pyramid

He served a a marine in the World

Of Mexican Travel
Mexico, which ba become a popu
lar destination with many travelers
of late, la being greatly enjoyed by
Mra. Alex Sparrow and her daughter.
Harriet, who. with Mia Carllna Sher-
idan, of Santa Barbara, are now trav-
ellng In Interior Mexoco.
Mm. Sparrow write In Spanish to
J. C. Hunter, from whom she studied
the language, from Guadalajara,
where 1 located one cf the most
beautiful cathedrals on this conti
nent. She relate that she finds no
difficulty In conversing with native
resident In their own language,
which ha added much to the pleas
ure of her travels.
Mrs. Sparrow also wrote from Lake
Chapala, saying "We spent two hour
on this beautiful lake and enjoyed it
very much."
The group expect to remain in
Mexico for some tlma longer.
