NEW YORK, Nov. fi.-(AP) Er
mine and orchids, rich velvets and
Jewels transformed Madison Square
Oarden Into the season's most bril
liant panorama of fall fashions at
the opening of the 63rd national
horse show last night.
The boxes became ft sea of colorful
gowns, rich furs and fragrant cor
sage bouquets as society gathered for
the event which marked the opening
of the winter social season. Ermine
coats by the dozens passed down the
aisles, ' and diamonds, emeralds and
rubles flashed In the lights that
played on the flag-decked arena.
Striking wraps were worn. Be
sides the great display of ermine
wraps, varying all the way from brief
capes to coats which almost swept
the ground, there were many whit
and silver fox capes and mink coats
Long dark broadcloth wraps whose
revers shimmered with gold embroid
ery and paillettes, rich brocades and
black and deep colored velvets often
collared with ermine were among the
most striking. Floor length ' wraps
were chosen by the majority of wo
men, although a number of shorter
models were also seen.
Black gowns were a great favorite.
Regal black velvets, sheer black tulles
embroidered In glittering silver
threads and slender black crepes all
were seen.
Besides these there were a number
of colored gown in rich and glowing
tints. Velvets In wine, coronation
red, sapphires blue and deep green
tones, pearl gray chiffons, white sat
ins and chiffons and a few silver
lamea lent color to the pageant.
Jewels worth thousands of dollars
flashed under the lights. Diamonds
glittered In long earrings, sapphires
and rubles gleamed In bracelets and
rows of pearls shown from throats.
