Smart ba-wbail club owner here nave
token a tip from the farmer and are
fattening promising players for tne
big league market.
The fian FranclAoo Seals and Mis
sion of the Pacific Coast league have
bad so much success with the ya
tern that It's a regular practice far
club officials to send a promising
young man out to a ranch to put
little meat on his ribs during the
off-season.
The latest recipient of this sort of
care Is Harry 'Tim" Marble, younger
brother of Alice Marble, women's na
tional singles ton n Is champion. The
Missions are tending him up to Pres
ident Joe Bearwald'a ranch near Win
ters, Oallf., for beefsteak, and milk
to he will be ready to try out for the
team come spring.
Some of the products of the. fat-'
tentng process are Vernon Oomez. the
ocentrlo forkhandcr of the New York
Yankees; Frank, e Crosettl, Yankee
shortstop, and Eddie Joost, of the
Cincinnati Reds,
Oeorge Putnam, former Soal secre
tary, thought up the idea of super
vising the diets of young players, He
started in a modest way on Croaettl
by ordering quarts of milk to be left
on Prankle's doorstep every day,
Frankle didn't say what happened to
the milk, but he flourished and went
to the big leagues.
The Seals found themselves to a
few years later with Oomez, a whip
armed stripling who seemed too thin '
to impress big league scouts. Putnam I
hipped Lefty to a health farm near
Saratoga, where he followed a prodi
gious eating program but nearly died
of ennui.
Oobes picked up a little weight -nd
after the season became a big leaguer,
Joost likowlee was too frail-appearing
to capture the fancy of too-ite
until the Mission president took blm
to a ranch last winter. Eddie played
brilliant ball and was plotted up by
the Reds toward the olose of the season.
