GIRL MOTHER SLEW
IS JURY'S VERDICT
. NEW YORK, Oct. 18. -(AP) Eliza
beth Smith, pal and shaken, awaited
In a Jail cell today her call to court
October 33 for sentence on a second
degree manslaughter conviction in
the slaying of her Illegitimate son.
A Jury of 12 men convicted her
lart night.
The flirt, who will be 10 next
month, stood stunned as the verdict
was announced. Then she shrieked,
moaned and crumpled In a Ha Int.
Edward Blanco, defense counsel,
said there will be an appeal "If I
have to pay for It myself,"
The verdict carries a maximum
prison term of 16 years.
The prosecution did not Insist on
the death penalty, asking only a con
viction that would be both "merciful
and Just."
Th state contended that Miss
Smith deliberately threw the baby to
a concrete areaway a few hours after
she delivered, the child unaided in
the bathroom of her home. The de
fense held that pain and terror rob
bed her of control of her actions,
that she fainted on the roof and the
Infant rolled from her arms.

co-op leaders are coming around to
the conclusion that a centralized na
tional bureaucratic system of con
sumer co-ops Lb au entirely different
thing from what they have been
working for. The theory la develop
ing among them tnat the co-op sys
tem must work up on a sound
economic basis and not be handed
down by decrae. For one thing, peo
ple must' be trained to handle the
system; for another, ' there Is the
farm price question.
Nevertheless, public agitation la be
ing contluued by Edward A. Flleno,
the Boston department store friend of
Mr. Roosevelt, who la the man behind
New Deal Interest In tne subpect.
The tenth biennial congress of the
Co-operative League did not get
much public attention at Columbus,
Ohio, last week, but it went on rec
ord In favor of federal aid to con
sumer co-ops.
Wnat will happen after election Is
yet to be decided.
Another claim for the new three
power money anviement is that It
will atop speculitlon In foreign ex
change. It will not do th?,t e'.ther.
Most of the technical opportunities
for speculation wnich exjiud before
are still open. There is a fre gold
market In London. The old gold
shipping arangements remain in ef
fect. The dollar, pound and franc wll
fluctuate dally. .
The mam difference is that the
three nations hopo to hold the fluctu
ations, of the franc within the narrow
range In which they have held the
pound and the dollar for more than
a year now. They may or may not
be successful In the course of com
ing months.
The position of the citizen specu
lator Is not improved or 'njured. He
cannot hold gold or buy now and he
could not before.
As a foremost outside economist
