London Wonders If Fair
- American Will Attend
King's House Party Next
Week At Sandringham.
Offered Film Role
HOLLYWOOD, Calif.. Oct. 18.
(AP) Mrs. Ernest (Wally) Simp
eon. American-born friend of King
Edward VIII of England, has been
offered a Hollywood motion pic
ture contract, Jack SherlU, actors
agent, announced today.
SherlU aald he cabled Mrs.
Simpson at her new residence, 16
Cumberland Terrace. In London,
where she took up residence after
deciding to divorce her English
business-man .husband.
Universal studio, Sherill said, Is
"keenly Interested" In her as an
acting prospect and a contract la
already prepared, awaiting the
brunette beauty's acceptance.
LONDON, Oct. 16. (AP) London's
fashionable set, discussing In May
fair drawing rooms the divorce action
brought by Mrs. Ernest (Wally) Simp
son against her husband, asked this
question today:
"Will 'Wally' attend King Edward's
house party at Sandringham next
week?"
M a y f a 1 r conversations centered
around prospects the American-born
friend of the monarch, who charged
her broker husband with misconduct
In a provincial divorce suit, may can
cel her plan to Join a small group
of the ruler' friends at the royal
country residence.
The house party was planned to
coincide with King Edward's first
visit to Sandringham since his fath
er. King George, died there last Jan
uary.
. Secure As Friend
Authoritative sources said tonight
Mrs. Simpson's position In British
court circles will remain secure as
long aa she retains the favor of her
strong-willed admirer. King Edward
VIII.
As King Edward's guest, she will
continue to dine off the royal dinner
plate alongside leaders In the em
pire's social life.
It Is entirely possible. Informed
observers said, that some of her fel
low guests will 'have strong feelings
in the matter. But those who know
the monarch's temperament hold
grave doubts that any recipient of
a royal Invitation would send regrets
or plead Illness, unless her or shs
were prepared to produse a doctor's
certificate.
A royal Invitation amounts to a
command. '
Attorneys for Mrs. Simpson, the
former Wallia Warfield of Baltimore.
were working to complete legal docu
ments for the hearing to be held at
Ipswich owing the assizes beginning
October 24.

No Defense Planned
Simpson has announced the peti
tion filed by his wife on charges of
misconduct, the only ground tor di
vorce under British law would not
be defended.
Time may tell whether the king's
affection is mere friendship or a
royal romance. Before and since his
accession to the throne Edward often
has had the frolicsome Mrs. Simpson :
in his pleasure parties.
King Edward, legally, may marry
whom he chooses out it might cost
him his throne.
There Is only one legal limitation
placed upon an English king In the
choice of his throne. Under the act
of settlement of 1701 he may neither
adopt the Roman Catholic faith nor
marry & Catholic. It Is understood
Mrs. Simpson is a Protestant.
Tradition Only Bar
The king does not have to obtain
permission from any quarter to
marry. There is no restriction which
says that he must marry royalty or
nobility; if he wishes he may pick a
commoner. The last king to marry
a commoner was Henry VIII.
While there is nothing In law to
prevent King Edward and Mrs. Simp
son getting married, there Is plenty
of modern ryal tradition which
would oppose it. Women who have
figured ' In divorce suits have been
on the black-list of King Edward's
predecessors for a long time.
His austere mother, Queen Mary,
has been so opposed to divorcees that
she barred them from all court func
tions during her long reign with
King George.
English peoplo say that King Ed
ward would arouse plenty of antago
nism among his people If he tried to
marry Mrs. Simpson.
They go further and declare that
such a marriage might have a se
rious effect on the position of the
throne. . They are equally emphatic
In saying there is no likelihood that
the king would venture such a step,
knowing the possible consequences.
What would happen If King Ed
ward should insist on marrying
someone to whom the country was
opposed? Nobody knows, because
there Is no precedent.
