PORTLAND, Oct. 18. (AP) Ore
gon lost one of Its best-known pio
neers last night with the death of
Mrs. Harriet McArthur, 85, the
daughter of a former United States
senator and mother of a congres-
man.
Mrs. McArthur, a native of Rlck
reall. waa the daughter of Col. James
w. Nesmlth. senstor from 1881 until
1887 and later a congresman. Her
son. the late C. N. McArthur, served
as United States representative from
the third Oregon district from 1015
to 1923.
Mrs. McArthur was one . of the
founders of the Oregon State Hlitor'
leal society and was long ldontlflcd
with the Oregon Pioneer sssoclatlon
Her memory of enrly time In the
northwest provided much material
for writers.
