J COUNTESS HOLDS
IS SIGNJ RUIN
Care For Pleasures Always
Precedes Crashing Of Civ
ilization, Daughter Of
Famous Tolstoy Warns.
RADDAM, Conn. (UP) Llvuu
close to the sou In an ordinary Oon-
nevucui jarmnouse In Haddam, with
the teeming highway to the ahore
running close to her door, live the
Countess Alexandra Tolstoy, daugh
ter of the great literary figure, Count
Leo Tolatoy.
Busily engaged In keeping chickens,
two cows, and a tiny vegetable gar
den, the countess Is far away from
the rush and turmoil of the world aha
once knew and also slightly removed
from the modern world which she df
nouncea In no uncertain term.
It Is difficult to believe that this
woman In her detached existence ha
known the luxurious life of Euro
pean nobility, the giddy whirl of the
Russian Imperial court, and later,
swallowed up In the maelstrom of
changing Ruasla, the wretchedness
and squalor of strife, pestilence and
dungeona.
Not Bitter Woman;
Perhap thla daughter and ens
tary of the great Russlsn literary
r".ster should be bitter and disillu
sioned. But to a visitor she com
pletely dissolve any preconceived no
tion of any auch attitude.
The countess' Is deeply engrossed
with life, and It Is suspected that
the three-year Interlude of quiet
which she ha spent In the Connecti
cut hills ha begun to pall. She would
like to ba In where the fighting I
thickest, grappling against social
evil. . . ,
Speaking of the confusion and
flight of this age, the countess offer
this warning:
"People are no longer living for
Ideal. They are not even living far
each other. They build dirigibles and
ny from Germany to the United
states faster than thoy ever did bo
ron. But why do they want to got to
feat? They want comfort. They want
pleasure. And that Is all people seem
to care about. No civilisation ever
lived very long like this.- You remem
ber the otvlllsatlon of , Rome and
Babylon? It will happen again."
Denounces Soviet Hystem. '
Upon mention of the 8ovtet Union
the countess' face growa stern and
the humor In her eyes die as she
asserts:
"It won't last." The apparent suc
cess of the five-year plan, she dis
misses with a shrug, saying, "The ex
periment ha only seemed to succeed.
Economically It has. But the familT
and religion are still In the balance.
Even now thore Is a trend toward the
reinstatement of the family, And al
though there are only 8b ichurche
standing In Russia, at Christmas and
Easter It Is Impossible to keep the
people from them." . . .,.
The countess descrr.e her ratnar
aa a religious anarehls ,, adding that
"this statement of mine astonUhe
most Americans." The countess view
although somewhat modified, parallel
his, In that ahe believe the necessity
for law Is diminished In proportion
to the strength ot religious faith.
"Morals and rellgloua standards
have given place to personal greed.
Money money that I all people
care about," the countess wearily ar
guea. That ahe herself la deeply re
ligious Is relt rather than known.
