tional vice-commander ot the Legion,
former commander of the department
of Minnesota and Is at present state
auditor of the organization.
Frequent applause Interrupted the
speaker as he asserted that Roose
velt and the new deal are leading
the United States down the same
steps as those taken iy Russia, Italy,
Cuba and "poor, misguided Spain;"
that-' the present administration has
not kept a single platform or cam
paign promise: that "wo have had
enough of pleasant smiles and ora
tory now we want 6ome action;" and
that Roosevelt and his new dealers
liave gone so far away from their
own party that they are no longer
oalled Democrats, even by them
selves. Says Promises L'likcpt
"My father," King stated, believes,
f along with a lot of other people, that
wo have no Democratic president now
and have not had for the past three
-Wars. The Democrats have been sold
Sown the river. They and everyone
else were given In 1933 promises, not
one of which has been fulfilled This
Is not merely a political campaign
as we ordinarily think of It. It Is not
based Just on party platforms and
differences of opinion. This Is a
struggle between two classes of peo
ple those who believe that there Is
nothing wrong with our American
form ot constitutional government,
and those who want to change it."
Reviewing the struggle of the
American people for freedom which
resulted In the revolutlcn. King
stated that the dictatorship of 1936
Is no different from that of 1869.

velopment of democracy and the
writing of the constitution, King
said:
"Why should anyone come to you
people and talk about the develop
ment of our constitution on the evo
of a presidential election? Because
there Is now In power an admlnla
tratlon which not only does not be
lieve In our constitution but has
preached that that great document
has produced misery ma despair ana
hampered us with restrictions. I call
, that treason."
L Communism Taught 1
J The speaker aseened that commu
nism and like doctrines r being
taught In schools and even preached
from pulpits. He told his listeners
that If they valued their nomes ana
freedom to Insist that their pastors
keep out of politics. Continuing
King said the administration hopes
to destroy the present form ot gov
ernment. It was Roosevelt himself,
King said, who Insisted that we rec
ognized Soviet Russia, a move that
opened our doora not. only to com
munist money but to communist
propaganda, ao that now an honeat
workman Is kept from hla lob by
"oommunlstlo thugs" who continually
stir up labor trounlea.
Xn regard to the president's recent
statement that he did not wish or
seek communistic support. King said
"It President Roosevelt does not want
communistic support, he has my
sympathy. Because that'a exactly
what he's got, and Is what his actions
deserve. He has gathered close to him
a host of sovlet-bltten radicals, men
like Tugwell who has not been re
moved or reproved for definite com
munistic statements."
New Deal "Cold Deck"
King stated that the theories and
governmental experiment being con
ducted by the new deal are not new
at all, that they have been tried and
found to bo failures hundreds of
years ago. "This Isn't a new deal
we're being handed It's a 'cold
deck'." King told bis audience He
rapped the new deal policies of ex
penditure and accused Roosevelt of
being untruthful in that ha promised
to decrease governmental expendi
tures and governmental employes.
Instead of which he haa gone about
u far the other way as possible, ac
cording to King.
"It will take three generations to
pay off the national debt as it now
stands,' King charged. "Prom the
bottom of my heart I pity .he young
people of today, who face the fact
that no matter what they do they
can never get out of debt as long
as they live. And not only them
selves, but their children and their
children's children and so on."

"It is hard for Americans to be
lieve that there Is really anything
wrong with things going on in this
country, we are loathe to believe
that our president and nls admlnla
tratlon would double-cross us. But
it is time we are waking up to face
the fact that if we go only a litue
further along the route we are trav
eling, the only picture we have to
faoo 1 that of Russia."
Asserting that Roosevelt has de
nied the veterans' a right to com
pensation, and that tlicro is no group
to which a country la more indebted
than the veterans, King made a plea
for the election of Gov. Alfred M.
Landon. "It la tune we had a busi
ness administration. We have had
too many promises. We want a true
patriot and an honest man In the
nresldentlal chair. All Landon can't
speak, but he Is honest, patriotic,
and has an unblemished record And
he la going to the White House
Preceding hla epeech at the high
school, King was honored with a
banquet by the local Legion post ana
ex-service men at Valentine's cafe.
He was Introduced by Paul McDon
ald, of Ashland. Medford post com
mander, Joe P. Pllegcl thanked the
visitor for his short oodrcss In behalf
of the group.

MESSAL JAILED
Lester Messal, admitted driver, au
thorities say, of the auto that hit and
killed Everett Thompson, 00, of l-ai
ent, a Pacific highway pedestrian, on
the night of September 13 laat, this
morning entered a plea of guilty to
driving an auto while his driver's li
cense was suspended. He waa sen
tenced to 40 days In the county Jail.
The district attorney's office an
nounced that the Jackson county
grand Jury had been called for Octo
ber 26, and would conduct a thorough
Investigation Into the circumstances
surrounding the death of Thompson
Messal had his driver's license sus
pended for six months last July on a
reckless driving charge.
He was arrested In this city last
Saturday night, as driver of the hit
run car, after a long search by state
police. He was arrested by the city
police as he drove Into a service sta
tion. Messal, who has been empioyeu
In a Klsmath county sawmill, claims
extenuating circumstances In tne
death of Thompson, and that he was
blinded at the time by the lights of
an approaching auto.

Sandwiches, Cafe and An Apple.

Breathes there a child who doeant
prefer a sandwich to a cooked meal?
Probably not. Children lore to eat
snacks, and that's why school lunch
boxes are such fun. Nice white or
whole wheat bread with delicious fill
ing ... a big. shiny apple ... a piece
of cake or a couple of sugar cookies
. that's a heavenly meal In a
child's opinion. We can keep our
fruit cups, hot soups and roasts.
Since sandwiches mean so much to
a younster, by all means make them
tasty and attractive. Often mothers
aren't around when children eat their
school luncheons. The food must sell
Itself, so to speak, without benefit
of sermon.
A good Idea Is to glvs a child on a
sandwich containing moat or eggs and
another made of something sweet.
Here Is a practical suggestion:
Chopped Tongue and Egg Sandwiches,
3 slices tongue, chopped
S slices tomato, chopped
t hard-cooked egg, chopped
3 tablespoons Beat Foods Real May
onnaise Salt snd pepper to taste.
Mix together tongue, tomato, egg
and real mayonnaise. Season with
salt and pepper. Use a layer of fill
ing between slices of bread. Makes
cup filling. Makes 6 sandwiches.

2 tablespoons Best Poods Real May
onnaise 1 package (3 ounces) cream cheese
cup finely chopped dates
1 teaspoon lemon Julco.
Blend real mayonnaise, cream cheese
and dates. Spread between thin slices
of bread cut Into star shapes with
a cookie cutter. Makes 1 cup filling.

The annual home and community
recreation school for project leaders
in recreation will be held next week,
commencing Monday, October 13. at
8:00 p.m., in the courthouse audito
rium. This school Is one of the major
activities of the home economics ex
tension project In recreation. It Is
under the direction of Mabel C. Mack,
county home demonstration agent,
The instruction at the school will be
given by Mrs. Gertrude Skow Sanford,
extension specialist In community so
cial organization.
The plan of the school is to give
training work In the directing of com
munity singing, pre-party gamea. ao
tlve games, and folk games. On Mon
day and Tuesday evenings leaders will
meet In Medford to receive instruc
tion from Mrs. Sanford on these va
rious activities. On Wednesday eve
ning the leaders are asked to schedule
meetings in their respective commu
nities and to direct all activities for
the evening. Thursday evening, the
leaders will again meet in Medford
with Mrs. Sanford to discuss their
problems and to complete the train
ing work of the school.
All active recreation leaders of the
county are expected to attend this
school, including leaders from the
granges, home economics extension
units, boy and girl scout leaders, 4-H
club leaders, churches, lodges, and
other organisations. Any organisation
Interested In the recreation activities
are invited to send men or women
representatives to this school. There
