pefttofflce department revealed today

oua people who mall letters and then
regret It.
"Remorseful wives," said Prank
Zllla. assistant superintendent of pott
office service, "are always wanting
their letters back, but they .don't get
them without going through a set
procedure."

even If a fair lady weeps, pleada and
falls In a faint at the mall-box.

postofflce."

reason for the change of heart.
Dilly-dallying Is fatal, for after the
letter Is mailed each minute sees
tha postofflce machinery apeed It to
wards Its destination.
"We won't even admit we've got
the letter," said Ellis, "until 13 ques
tions hsve been answered satisfac
torily." The questions mostly concern Iden
tification of the letter. The appli
cant has to say where It was mailed,
the date and hour, the amount of
postage, whose name Is on the out
side and even a description of the
envelope.
Must Give Reason.
"You Just can't say It' a purple
envelope,' explained the official
"You've got to say "purple envelope,
square and heavy paper.'"
The real atlcker among the 13 ques
tions, however, Is "reason for hold
ing." This means that If a wife waa
angry when she penned the letter
and then cooled off, she'd better ssy
to.
Wives are not the only remorseful
setter-senders. Sometimes lt'a the
husband. Experience has ahovm,
though, that rather than go through
the routine, men sa, 'Oh, well, I'll
explain to her later."

Grease shallow baking dish, lay
in half the oysters and pour over a
half of the liquor. Mix crumbs and
melted butter. Spread half over the
oysters. Repeat, using remainder of
the material. Two layers only should
be used. Bake In a quick oven (425
degrees) for about 35 minutes.

Arrange In alternate layers In a
buttered baking dish 1-3 can cream
style corn, then crushed Snow Flake

can of deviled ham, thinned down
with a bit of milk. Dot the ham
with prepared mustard and bits of
butter. Continue with the above In
gredients and In the same order, until
all are used, finishing off with more
crushed Snow Flakes. Pour over all
about 1-3 cup milk. Bake at 375 de
grees, a bit more than a moderate
oven, for about lA hour. Brown over
the top Just before serving. Serve
with canned buttered string beana or
spinach, If this Is an off-the-shelf
dinner or luncheon. Good for either.

Surveye of some 30 lines of economic
aotlvlty In the far west show further
gains for general business.
The surveys, made by the Federal
Reserve Bank of San Francisco,
brought out theso chief trends:
Industrial production increased
more than seasonally during August.
Building activity Increased further.
Twenty large cities In the seven west
em states had permits totaling 118.
787,000 the largeat total for any
month In recent years. It was up 78
percent from last year. Residential
building continued to expand.
Engineering contracts, as tabulat
ed by the reserve bank, declined.
These figures fluctuate considerably
on a monthly basis.
Most trade measures showed de
clines from July, but gains over Isst
year.
Industrial employment Increased,
but less than seasonally for the dis
trict. Oregon employment, however,
gained more than seasonally, though
the state's payrolls did not keep
pace.
The Important coast fruit canning
Industry, at lta peak In August, ex
panded about In line with expecta
tions. Other Industries, such as steel,
glsss containers, furniture, sugar re
fining, oil, tires, boxes and . power
production showed output gaining or
better maintained than In most re
cent years.
Lines which failed to keep up with
seasonal trends Here department
store sales, freight carloadings and
new automobile sales.
Agricultural tondlt.ons continued
favorable, both In production and
marketing. Commercial bank loans
expanded seasonally.

3 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons softened butter, salt
and pepper as desired.
Spread over the top stoaK alter tnc

folded pleoe of wrapping paper to
keep the crumba from becoming too
brown. Bake at 373 degrees, a on
more than a moderate oven, for 1
hour. This may be served with a
white sauce or with mock Holland
