OLD MYSTIC, Conn. (UP) Charles
Q. Eldredge, veteran world traveler,
who has celebrated his 01st birthday.
Is the sola owner and curator oi the
Eldredge Free Museum, which boasts
of more than 7,000 Items collected
In the last Bl yeara.
Early In life Eldredge developed a
mania for collecting thlnga, and In
1917 he erected a separate building
for hla trophies and opened his free
museum. Since that time, more
than 60.000 persons have viewed the
collection, while Eldredge himself has
personally conducted 29,613 persona
through the building.
The collector 1 as fond of enter
taining as he la of collecting curios.
He displayed his love of entertaining
friends In 1801 when he returned
to Old Mystic after engaging In the
building business for 20 years, and
built a large reoreatlonal center
which he called Rlvarvlew. . Hun
dreds of guests from Connecticut and
neighboring states have used his
bowling alleys, shooting galleries, and
ether amusements.
Tbe museum houses as strange a
collection as has ever beon assembled.
In front of It rests the bleac'f-d
skeleton of whale, so feet long, the
gift or Capt. John O. Splcer of Oro
ton, Conn., who caught It In Hudson
Bay In 1879.
An enormous penguin greets the
visitor Just Inside the door. It came
from Cape Hum and the card around
Its neck Is typical of the labels Mr
Eldrldge naa placed on the exhibits.
The card reads: "I am aure that you
folks, like me, are close readers of
the Bible, so you will remember that
eomewhere It tells about those who
have ears and hear not and eyes and
see not. Well, here la a bird which
has wings and files not."
Eldredge takes more pride In hla
souvenirs than In hie natural history
collection. Ha has what he believe.
Ir the flrat cannon ball fired agalnat
rort oumter, and he aays that Ed
mund Ruffln, the fellow who fired
that shot, also fired the laat shot of
the Civil War. When he beard that
had surrendered he ahot himself
through the head.
Some of his other priced Items are
I petrfled coeoanut, which, he says,
dates from 437 A, D. and waa found
during the digging of the Panama

and which won the world prlte for
that sort of thing In 1S3; a petrified
oyster weighing eight and one-half
pounds which was found In South
Africa In 1869; a piece of wood from
the Confederate gunboat Merrimac;
some wooden hlngea used on a barn
