Day's News
By HIANK JKNKINS
N THIS extremely political year,
there Is a lot of wild talk about
sharing the wealth.
The demogogues who are Indulging
in this talk (for the purpose of get
ting votea for themselves) seek to
create the impression that NEARLY
ALL the wealth of this country la
owned by a few hundred people.
They tell us that they propose to
divide the possessions of the very
wealthy up among the rest of us, so
that EVRRYBODY will be rich and
happy.
I8TEN: "
i if the EXCESS of all Individual
Incomes of more than $5000 were dis
tributed to the REST of the popula
tion of this country, each person
would receive only 2B a year.
Y ET'S see If we can make that a
u little plainer.
,If we took from everybody getting
more than 15000 a year the EXCESS
above $5000 and divided the total
sum so obtained up among all those
receiving LESS than $5000, the share
of each would be only $28.
MUCH for Income. Now let's
kJ cc
consider prlnolpal.
It the PRINCIPAL of all Indi
vidual wealth oxceedlng 12,600,000
were divided up among those pos
sessing less than S3, 500.000, aa the
late Huey Long suggested, the dl
vision would yield to each of us
only 135.
.
IF WK went to all the trouble, you
1 aoe, of dividing up the wealth of
the very wealthy and parceling It
out among the rost of us, the sum
we would receive would be so small
as hardly to-.be worth while.
BUT the damage that would be
done by such a proceeding would
be Immense snd ghastly, and would
affect all Of Ua DISASTROUSLY.
Wealth, you know, Isn't represented
merely by silver end paper dollars
which can be easily divided. In this
country wealth consists chiefly ot
land and housee and machinery. The
value ot tbe Southern Facltlo rail'
road, for example, XSNT represented
by so many dollars stacked up In a
bank vault. Instead, It consists of
right-of-way, roadbed, station . and
terminal buildings, engines, cars, etc
If we started dividing these things
up, giving to John Smith a length of
steel rail and to Jim Jones a oar
wheel, etc., we would WRECK the
great Southern Paclflo railroad and
take away the Jobs of those who now
work for It, and at the same time
w wouldn't be doing ourselves any
particular good.
HE trouble wl'tb these windy
apostles of sharing the wealth la
that they are long on oratory end
short on FACTS.
It they would devote a little hon
est study to the tacts, they would
have to admit that their wild schemes
wouldn't work and 11 they were
TRIED would bring ruin and de
struction to tbe country as a whole.
