Puts in 46th Straight Year
As Gatherer in Noted For
est Patch Area Yields
20,000 Gallons Thus Far
Mrs. Alice Hamilton of Klamath
Jtells today wears th mythical orown
of champion huckleberry picker of
the Huckleberry mountain area 12
miles southeast of Union Creek In
the Rogue River national forest.
Mrs. Hamilton this season put In
her 40th consecutive year aa a gatli
orer of huckleberries In the famous
mountain berry patch, It was reveal
ed today by Karl L. Janouch. forest
supervisor. Bhe has been going each
year to the Huckleberry mountain
sector since sho was sevon years old,
Mr. Janouch said. .
' The huge berry patch has proved
more popular this year than ever be
lore and the facilities provided by
the forest aorvlce for 80 camps have
been extensively utilized, Mr. Jan
ouch related. Many persons, he aula,
drive to the area to purchase berries,
the prevailing price being $1 a gal
lon. (11,000 Crop
Up to aeptember 8. Mr. Janouch
tated, 30.0U0 gallons of berries had
been gathered and the picking la atlll
In progress. At a'l a gallon, this rep
resents a gross Income of 920,000 to
the pickers, he pointed out.
Three gallons a day, the supervisor
xplalned, constitute an average day's
work. Recently, however, four persons
tn one camp picked 48 gallons In
three days, representing a daily re
turn of au.76 for each.
The huckleberry area, situated on
top of the mountain which derives
It name from the berry, comprises
about 30,000 acres. The area contains
to commercial timber and Is produc
tive of only the berries and Christ-
mat trees, Mr. Janouch related. IU
yield of berries and yule trees, how.
ver. Is valued at more than 930,000,
he aald.
I'tckers From Afar
. The supervisor stated that during
recent Inspection at the berry
campground he saw cars from Wash
ington and California. Moat of the
berry pickers, however, v came from
astern and aoutheaatern sections of
Oregon, where fresh fruit la not
Crown and la therefore highly valued,
fee aald.
Some of the berry pickers set up
their camp tents early In July and
remain until late In September, Mr.
Junouoh related. The time of the
eraeon, he explained, determines the
use to which the berries are beat
adapted, the early berries being beat
for Jama and Jellies while the late
ones are auperlor for canning. The
best canning berries are those picked
late In the season after floaty
weather haa developed the luscious
sweetness, he averred.
"Huckleberry mountain provides
tlie largest berry area on the Rogue
River national forest and the best
tn the state," the supervisor declared
with pride.
Code of Ethics
' The berry pickers have developed
n unwritten code of ethics and woe
unto him who violates It, Mr. Jan.
ouch aald. Bach selects the spot in
which he wanta to pick, for example,
nd no poaching la permitted, he
xplalned.
NO smoking la allowed under for
est rulea excepting In the camp ares
nd the old-timers are fervent In
biding by this law, Mr. Janouch
aid. They realise, he added, that a
fir would deatroy the berry, patch
forever.
Turns Detective
Recently a picker who . Insisted on
Wolatlng the smoking rule Joined the
mp. He waa reported but he took
great care not to amcke whenever a
guard was around, Mr. Janouch re
lated. The veterans continued to re
port him and to Insist that he be
punished. Finally a guard from an
other station Joined the encampment
as a picker, giving a good imitation
of a Cl-mrm, the supervisor recalled, i
nnauy, when the offender was
convinced that the newcomer waa a
bona, fide picker, he became careless
nd started smoking. He waa prompt
ly cited to appear In Justice court
and later was fined.
Jack Crump and an assistant are
stationed In the area as forest
guarda. They keep a record of the
erry pickers and the amount of ber
ries gathered, Mr. Janouch said.
