will come to Medford this year. Hed-
ricK stated.
Because of the record Increase In
new residents noted In Oregon so
far this year, principally as a result
of middle-western drought condi
tions, an increase In local school
registrations was expected. Indica
tions so far, however, give no prom
lss of -any more than a slight In
crease over last year, but school
officials were definite In stating that
It was Impossible to make an ap
proximation as yet.
S tude n ts were to rc port for all
classes today, although many classes
had shortened periods and most were
for the purpose of giving assign
ments and checking registration. This
week-end saw the return of all teach
ers, most of whom had spent the va
cation at college and university sum
mer sessions or in traveling. Very
few vacancies existed In the city
schools this year and all have been
filled.
The majority of county achooU
opened today, although a few preced
ed the general opening by a week
and some will not begin the term
until next Monday. Some pupils In
the county started their studies yes
terday, although most schools ob
served the holiday.
Estimates of registration In schools
outside towns of the county cannot
be made until next week. County Su
perintendent C. R. Bowman an
nounced, as results are always much
slower coming in than are those in
the city, and the various opening
dates make the task of completing
tabulations more difficult.
Most students working in seasonal
occupations will enter school within
the next two or three weeks, when
registration totals will bo announced.
