the city of Ashland on the under
standing a like sum would be set
aside for nayment to the parent of
Sam Prescott, city policeman slain by
a bandit In 1931.
Through lta attorney, Frank J. Van
Dyke, the city alleges that the money
was never paid the parenta because
they could not qualify aa dependents.
Commission records, however, show
that the aum was set aside for the
purpose and charges to the city have
been based on such a payment since
that time, Mr, Van Dyke stated.

PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 8. (AP)
Heavy migration of farm settlers
from the middle west Is creating a
serious relief and employment situa
tion, a resettlement administration
report aald today,
"When well located, new families
are making a success, but unless the
farm Itself can supply their needs,
they must seek employment off tho
'rn," said Walter A. Duffy, regional
director, "A large percentage of the
new settlers are seeking work In
competition with our workers and
many of them are going on relief." ,
Many Hellef Cases (
Duffy said relief cases among the
newcomers range from 13 per cent
In well-settled areas up to 00 per
cent In some poor farming com
munities. He estimated that not
over 25 per cent of the settlers had
been able to buy farms already In
operation.
The bulk of the new settlement Is
In the Willamette valley and south
ern Oregon, aald the report.
Duffy reported out that cutover
timber land, of which much la be
ing purchased, usually requires heavy
clearing. Furthermore, he said, much
of the land la not good soil and Is
far from market and labor oppor
tunities. The net result, In his opinion, Is
that many of the settlers will be
forced on relief while counties will
maintain schools, roads and other
services In the Isolated regions.
Long Term Loans Aid
Duffy said the resettlement ad
ministration wm endeavoring to aid
newcomers with long term loans
where It was felt such loans would
be of benefit both to the family and
the community.
Land optioning haa been complet
ed on a set-up of new farma In
Yamhill, W Mi t iiR ton and Polk coun
ties, all of which will be fertile,
well eaulDDed and of adequate size.
This project was designed primarily
for local needs, however, so no pref
erence will be given to out-of-state
famine.
Duffy said additional aid was com
ing from county agents and cham
bers of commerce In the form of In
formation to settlers concerning soil
types, klnda of farming usually found
successful In alee of farma necessary.
Federal land bank officials are also
co-operating In arranging reasonable
terms for farms they are selling.

he will attend the opening of the
annual regatta there. Before he left
he said ho would not return to his

PROSPECT, Sept. 8. (Spl.) Or
ganization was completed here today
of the Church of the Nazarene with
24 charter members and plana are
now being carried forward for the
erection of a church building. The
building la to be completed before
winter. It la the first organized
church this community haa had In
50 years.
Organization of the church Is the
outcome of the series of revival meet
ings held here recently by the Elmer
Gandy evangelists. The revivals were
so successful It was decided to or
ganize a church and the Rev, James
Dole, Prospect preacher, was chosen
pastor.
The members appear to be enthu
siastic and last bunday a baptismal
service, said to be the first of Its kind
here, was held on the Rogue river.
The building program Includes the
renovation of the old Prospect school
house for a Sunday school unit and
the erection of an auditorium which
will seat about 150 persona. Lumber
has already been ordered and con
struction is to start without delay.
The buildings will be situated on the
south side of Crater Lake highway at
the entrance to Prospect. Many local
workers have voluntercd to help In
the construction. This will be the
third Nazarene church to be erected
In Jackson county.

heavy crops were Sitka spruce along
the coast and western pine along the
west slope of the Cascade range from
Mt. Jefferson north Into Washington.
Douglas fir, western hemlock and
western red cedar are raid to be bear
ing heavy and medium crops along
the west slope of the Cascades and
on the southern 'Oregon coast.
The Junior high sch'ol book ex
change will be open. Friday afternoon
from 1 to 5 p. m. to buy and sell
second-hand ninth grade texts. All
pupils wishing to buy or sell books
are urged to come at this time, as
the exchange will not be open again
until the textbook distribution for
the seventh and eighth grades has
been completed Tuesday morning.

fruit, the eastern pear markoi will

on the University of Oregon campus
this week for the start of an Inten
sive three weeks' training hi adult
education. More than 200 are en
rolled In the school, a WPA project.
