FULL RESEARCH

first exhaustive geologlo research of
the Lava Beds national monument
has been oompleted by J. Velmv Lewis
and Sumner M. Anderson, national
park sorvioe geologists, revealing ex

volcanlo activity In the monum.ni
haa been comparatively recent, with
quite a number of flows aa young as
800 years. A few of the chimneys or
gas vents are regarded aa even
younger. However, the larger lava
flowa, underlying moat of the monu
ment, are estimated to be many thou
sands of years old, going as far back
as 80,000 years. .
The scientists expressed particular
interest in the lava caves honey

ceasibie by openings In their roofs
and were onoe flowing with molten
rock, the Vws leaving behind many
strsnge and fantastlo designs, now a
source of wonderment for monument
visitors.
Evidences of animal and human
life have been found In a number
or tne oaves, Including the teeth and
bones of a came and a young masto
don which roamed the Lava Beda area
many thousands of years ago when
these types of animals were preva
lent. The canine tooth of a large
extinct carnlvon was also found. Ths
age of the lava la largely based on
the presence of these bones.
Of unusual Interest are Ice forma
tions In a number of the caves. Thsy
take the form of froren salagmltes
and stalactites with some over 18
feet In length and several feet In
thickness and are as clear as crvstai.
So constant rsmalns the temperature

The following recreational bulletin
was Issued today by Karl L. Janouch,
supervisor of the Rogue River na
tional forest:
"Fishing is poor in most parte of
the forest. Rocky Point continues to
be good; Lake of the Wooda la fair;
Pour Mile lake is yielding good
catches ot sllverslde by still fishing
with worms and of rainbow by troll
ing. "Good oatches of native trout an
being made In Rogue river above
Brown's cabin and large rainbow and
eastern brook are rising to flies In
Rogue river between Union Creek
and Woodruff Meadows bridge. Dia
mond lake and the North Umpqua
are fair. Spinner fishing In the Mid
dle lake of the Seven Lakes Basin Is
very good. The upper middle fork
of Rogue river Is good; South Pork
Is poor.
"Huckleberries at Huckleberry
mountain average about three gallons
a day. There are about 450 persons
picking berries In the region. In the
vicinity of Huckleberry gap and
Huckleberry lake on the Umpqua dl-
vide, the berry patches are scattered,"
requiring considerable hunting for
them. Residents there are averaging
two gallons a day.
"For those Interested In unususj
drives Into the forest, a trio to the-
Blue Rock lookout Is suggested. This .
lookout point Is about 30 miles from
Butte Palls over a good mountain
road. Directions for reaching It ara:
rouow eigne to the South pork of
Rogue River COO camp, then signs
directing to Parker Meadows and '
Lodgepole, then about three miles
up turn to right at a algn whloh
directs you to Blue Rook. This look
out house is on a 40 foot tower which
gives a good view of the Blue Can
yon country. One may drive directly
to tne tower and the lookout man
will be glad to receive visitors.
"The last four miles of the road
an quite steep and a canteen of water
should be carried In case it Is needed
for the radiator; no other trouble
should be encountered as the road
Is sufficiently wide. The slick leaf
brush fields along this road war
caused by a large forest fire which
Durned the timber years ago. Inter
esting hikes may be made Into Blue
canyon from this lookout and some
huckleberries may be found, al
though the crop Is rather light.
"Another trip of Interest whloh Is
