man L. Divine, pastor of the First
Presbyterian church, and Mrs. Divine
returned last night from a 1,800-mIle
trip through Oregon and Washington.
During the four-day journey they vis
ited In Portland, Olympla, Seattle.
Spokane and Walla Walla. Dr. Divine
said today that crops In the two
states were abundant, business In
general was good and everyone seem

honors were paid to Dern, with salutes

The funeral train will leave Wash

church, under plans worked out to
day by the war department and mem
bers of the Dern family.
Three veterans of the World war
were mentioned prominently in spec
ulation over the probable successor
to the late secretary.
They were Frank Murphy, high

lands; Paul V. McNutt. governor of
Indiana, and Floret! a Laguardla,
