NEW YORK, Aug. 22. Yes, New York City ig quite differ
rent from Medford. Saturday is a big day for the merchants,
but here they close up shop at noon for the week-end don't
open their doors until 9 a. m. Monday morning. Ye editrtr need
ing a clean shirt for his appearance in more or less respectable
society, sallied forth after luncheon to get one. But whilo Wool
worth's and several drug stores were open, no men's shops near
the Grand Central Station were,, and no department Btores. Ev
erything shut up tight as a drum. Oxblood polo shirts at a varie
ty shop were offered at 08 cents, but we decided our Medford
product even if well soaked with Chicago smudge and cinders
from the N. Y. Central right-of-way, would impress the await
iug family better than to appear in such a bizarre outfit in or
thodox and conservative Stonington. So we kept our money and
turned down the fat, bald and perspiring variety salesman flat.
Perhaps the assurance that he wore oxblood polo shirts on HIS
week-ends, had something to do with it. We didn't like his
manners or the out of his jib.
Perhaps the New York Central is not the worst railroad in
the United States but it. is certainly one of them. Wo camo here
from Chicago on the "Commodore Vanderbilt" named after the
famous ferry-boat captain who coined the memorable phrase:
"the public be damned," which
vance in railroad service since
mark his heirs and assigns are trying to shoot at. It ig really
most striking, the complete and shocking change in attitude
and atmosphere, as tjio traveller
fers at Chicago from the U. P. or any western road to the
grandpappy of them all, the venerable and self-satisfied N. Y. C.
The best way to describe it might be to say the New York Cen
tral is well named, with the emphasis on this NEW YORK it
is a little chunk of Broadway,
metallic, matrialistic, entirely
point of view throughout.

even If a doctor feels Justified In talk

Of course, since the Major Bowes

agency flourishes like the fabled ce

GOVERNOR LANDON make his
first Important speech of the
campaign at th village of Middlesex,
In Pennaylvanla, where he wa born
a little less than 48 yean ago, Lan
don, you aw, is a fairly young man,
as Presidential candidates go.
Ha la several year younger than
President Roosevelt, who 1 quit
young as President go,
GOVERNOR LANDON ChOM a his
subject. "Th American Way of
Life," and he ssld some things that
are worth attention. For example:
"Under our American Institutions,
we have enjoyed mor liberty and
have attained a higher (tandard of
living than ANY OTHER PEOPLE tn
the world."
That la true. And It I something
to be proud of.
HE ADDED: . '
"This American way of life 18
being che'lenged. We are told that
It does not meet modern require
ments. Some are trying to supplant
our Institutions by . others from
abroad." , 1
This writer, who I Just on Ameri
can among 138 million, hope fer
vently that, these persons who are
trying to change our institutions, sub
stituting Importations from the Old
World for them, fall dismally In their
design. . .
Thla la a pretty good country as
It is.
. -.
ANOTHER good statement by
Landon:
"Th Amerlcsn remedy for unem
ployment Is REAL work at good
wages."
What he mesns Is this: Jobs created
by government Just to keep hands
busy don't get us very far. With all
the billions being spent by govern
ment, there are still ten million un
employed. ONE mora quotation from Lan
don' pech: "Th remedy lor
monopoly and speclsl privilege I to
do away with them."
That la ABSOLUTELY TRUE.
The polltlclana' way of dealing with
monopoly and special privilege ha
been to TALK LOUDLY about tnm
At vote-getting time, but DO NOTH
ING. That haa been th Republi
can method. It haa been the Demo
cratic method.
It 1 the NEW DEAL METHOD.
Th New Deal talk a lot about
what It Is going to do to monopoly,
for example, but under th New Deal
monopoly goea ahead Just as It haa
gone ahead In the past.
NRA was a vast scheme to FOSTER
monopoly.
WHAT Landon will do In tn way
of destroying monopoly. If he ,ls
elected, can not b said, for nobody
knows. But ha couldn't do much less
than the New Deal ha don.
ctenator COUZENS. of Michigan,

Senator Couiens Is an exceedingly

It Isn't, you ae, Just a cas of

demagogue politician are merely try
ing to make th bev.-nota think that
I th way It la because the have
not sr so much mow numerous

ha-ve heard how some similar con

Only the uninitiated believe the old
story that the GPU pounds admis
sions from prisoners with a rubber
nose. Thla honored and ancient po
lice method haa been widely used at
times, but seldom promotes the vol
unteer spirit so distinctive in Rus
sian confessions. In fact, it usually
leads to repudiations of confessions
later In open court.
Russian officials, have found It
more effective to barter with their
prisoners on a more practical basis.
They have the power of llfe.death,
comfort and happiness over all the
relatives and friends of the accused,
the wife, children, sweethearts. An
accused prisoner generally apprecl
atea the hopelessness of his own es
cape and can often be Induced to
give the Soviets the kind of a propa
ganda confession they want In re
turn for, promises of protection to
loved ones whose names are never
publicly mentioned.
It has been done more than once.
Every time trouble breaks out In
Europe, Japan moves again In China.
Thla has been established Japaneae
policy since 1931.
Aa soon aa world diplomats cen
centrated their attention on Spain,
the Japanese ambassador to China,
Shi gem Kawagoe, got busy. He sent
a calling Invitation to shaky, elderly,
General Sung Cheh-Yuan, chairman
of the so-called Hopei-Chahar polit
ical council. Such an Invitation
from a "Japanese ambassador Is a
command to any official of the North
China government.
The old warrior waa "advised" by
the ambassador that his government
should ask Japan for financial and
technical assistance to exploit the
natural resources of North China.
Later the ambassador announced to
foreign correspondents in Pelplng
that the general was "tn complete
agreement" with the suggestion. He1
did not go to the trouble of adding
that the general had a choice of be
ing In agreement or out of a Job.
