GROCERY BILLS
L BE HIGHER
Late Spring Frost Followed
By Drought Expected To
Curtail Supplies Pork
Is Exception To Rule.
By Slrrtd Arne
WASHINGTON, (yR-Bundays chick.
en should coat no more this winter
than last, figures from the depart
ment of sericulture show. But the
food bill seems likely to go up for
several other commonly used staples
such as milk and potatoes.
The weather had most to do with
It, tha report aays. First, there was
the late aprlng frost which harmed
fruit treea, and then the drought hit
states which grow foed for the am
mals which supply meat for the mar
kets.
The department's report does not
forecast actual prloea, but It shows
the food divisions In which supplies
are likely to be lower or higher than
last year. And when supplies aro low,
prloea rise.
Less Milk In Slht
The report s&ys:
Dairy products supplies are expect
ed to be slightly lower because pas
tures have been burned. That means
farmers hare to buy feed for their
cows, or else kill them and soil thsm
for meat. In either case it outs the
supply of milk for the dairies.
Poultry and egg supplies should be
larger. There were larger spring hatch
ings this year than last, Even so, the
prices may rise If the drought sends
feed prices so high that farmers de
cide not to raise their chickens to ma
turity. There will be less fruit. The spring
frost harmed the . trees. Apple snd
peach crops ere the smallest since
1031. Pears and citrus fruits, though,
promise to be plentiful.
There Is expected to be leu beef,
vesl and lamb for the next twelve
months. But thsre will be more pigs
than last year. The drought reduced
the amount of feed and the reduced
feed will probably curtail meat pro
duction. Potato Rhortage Keen
Lard will be 38 per cent more plen
tiful this year than last.
Butter prices are high because of
the drought, and farmers In tha In
tensive dairy reglona are builly pro
ducing It to meet the demand. But If
meat prices go high In proportion,
farmers are likely to sell their cows
for meat. That would mean less milk,
less butter fat, and lower stocks of
butter.
There will be plenty of wheat of
all kinds except those used for bread
and macaroni.
Rice stocks are expected to be
larger. Farmers In California and the
south planted more this year.
Potato supplies wtll be markedly
less this year. The prices for them
the laat two years were so low that
farmers plsnted less acres la pota
toes this year.
