BAM FOR BASKET
WHICH HELD QUINTS
CALLANDER, Ont., Aug. 21. (UP)
' Mrs. Alex LegTuo, a midwife who at
tended Mrs. Oliva Dlonne at birth of
the quintuplets, was painfully bruised
In a battle for possession of the meat
basket In which the famous babies
were first placed after they were
born, she reported to provincial police
at North Bay today.
The basket had been on display at
a refreshment booth near the Dafoe
hospital where Mrs. Legros was em
ployed. Lost night Mrs. Legros, who
owned the basket, wanted to take It
home with her. Mt&s Mildred Adams,
daughter of the proprietor of the
booth, and Harry Stmand, an em
ployee, reportedly attempted to stop
her, but Mrs. Legros eluded them and
carried the basket to her home across
the. road from the stand. Miss Adorns
and Slmand were said to have follow
ed Mrs. Legros to her home where,
during a quarrel, Mrs. Legros was
knocked to the floor.
Miss Adams and Slmard were said
to have taken the basket, but Mrs.
Legros caught up with them and In
another "fight" was knocked down
again. However, she managed to rc
gain possession of the disputed bas
ket and took; It home.
Mrs. Legros told the police she
would file charges of assault against
Miss Adams and Slmard tomorrow.
Police said Mrs. Legros was suffering
from bruises about the arms and legs,
SETS JULY RECORD
By completing 100 per cent of 1.
571,552 miles of scheduled flying,
planes of United Air Lines operating
between Med ford, Vancouver, Califor
nia and the east set an International
air transport record In July,: accord
ing to advices received today by L. G
Devaney, field manager of the com
pany here. Devaney reported that this
marked the first time any company
had completed 100 per cent of more
than a million and a half miles of
scheduled flying In a single month.
The mileage was flown on both the
company's Vancouver-M e d f o r d-San
Diego and Pacific Coast -Chicago-New j
York routes.
For the months of May, June and
July, United showed an average of j
99.9 per cent or 4.474.uiio mnes oi
scheduled flying, the official reported.
THREE FATALITIES IN
INDUSTRY DURING WEEK
SALEM, Aug. 21. (AP) There were
three fat&lttiea due to Industrial acci
dents In the state during the past
week, the Industrial accident com
mission reported.
The victims were Lewis TlHteon,
Oceanlake, logger; Thomas E. Moody,
Portland, log hauler, and C. J. Free
man, Deer Island, pile driver opera
tor. Accidents during the week totaled
993.
301 CARS PEARS
ROLLED TO DATE
Pear shipments from the Rogue rl7er
ralley up to last night totalled 301 cars
159 packed, for. eastern markets,
and 142 cars to canneries, principally
WUlamette valley and Portland can
neries, A considerable portion of the can
nery Bartletts ore being held in pre
coollng plants for later shipments, and
the same applies to the packed Bart
letts. The picking of the Bartlett crop
will be finished this week in most of
the orchards.
The Howell variety comes next for
harvesting. It Is a light crop, due to
the spring cold, and many of the
growers grafting the Howells with
other varieties.
The Southern Pacific freight de
partment reports four switch-engines
are used In the local yards to handle
the fruit crop, and that cars arc be
ing moved at an average of between
80 and 25 cars dslly.
