PETPINO, Aug. 10. (AP) A diet
of watermelon and rice cake was too
mtich or too little for tour youth
ful American marines held In bar
racks today after an asserted attempt
to trek almost 2,000 mllea across
Asia. . -
The quartet's plys to evade dis
cipline for hoisting a red flag at the
U. 3. embassy by fleeing across China
wns revealed in marine circles al
though officials conducting an In
vestigation refused to discuss details
of the Incident. .
After the flagpole prank. It 'was
asserted, the four decided to follow
: China's great wall 250 miles across
almost impassable mountains to
Shanhatkwan and then another
1,500 miles : across 1 Manchuria to
Vladivostok where they hoped, to
catch a steamer.
Apparently they were blithely un
aware of the dangers of desolation
and bandit attack in their path. But
after four days of the meager water
melon and rice diet, the youths re
turned to barracks here.
Investigators indicated disciplinary
action would be considered within
the next two weeks but stated they
had not determined what charges
might be made. -
The four, marine officials said,
were: Paul J. Wilson of Baltimore;
Stephen Redden of Bldgeley, Mary
land; Ernest Jameston , of Lakevlew,
Ore., and Edward Klrby of Los Angeles.

PARIS (UP) Automobile sales
In France have dropped 10 per cent
In the past year, trucks IS per cent
and motorcycles 30 per cent. Heavy
taxation is blamed. ,
Owners drive cars In Prance five
years. The standard -American prac
tice or trading in old cars for new
ones once a year doesn't apply here.
Taxes would eat up a still larger pro
portion of the amount spent on cars
If that were done,
The result Is that the private car
is restricted to a proportionately
much wealthier class than In Amer
ica, and French automobile produc
tion declines. 8ales of foreign cars
(which declined 11 per cent, slightly
more than that of domestlo models,
last year) are discouraged by heavy
Import taxes and also by the fact
that they are not designed to save
gasoline, as are French cars. Heavy
taxation on gasoline makes it costly.

VALLEE ASPIRES TO
CHICAGO, Aug. 19 (AP) The
plaudits of the crowd that saw him
conduct a concert by the Chicago
civic opera orchestra moved Rudy
Vallee to profess a new ambition to
day. .
He said he would devote his career
to symphonic music ''some day."
Directing an orchestra of that type,
he explained, was "more thrilling"
than leading a danco band, such as
his "Connecticut Yankees."
