Not that anybody believe It yet,
but Frank Menke still contend! that
L. Vanderstuyft, riding bicycle at
Paris In 1928, covered 79 mile,, ooa

parently never received the epistle,
for that's the last we ever heard from
It.
Speed Is a peculiar thing. When
Jack Medlca swam a mile In 20 min
utes, 67 and 8-10 seconds, It's a safe
bet the reports had him "biasing
along the course," or "flashing along
the route," or some other phrase
highly Indicative of speed. And yet
he was only averaging about 3 ana
8-8 miles an hour. A runner doing
the loo yard In 9 and 4-10 Is aver
aging about 30 m.p.h., and Olenn
Cunningham's fastest mile, 4:08.7 was
ticked off at about 14. Paavo Nurml
ran for an hour once, and ended
up Just 11 miles from where he
started.
The fastest a man has ever
traveled was 440.88 miles per .
hour. Meut. Francesco Agrllo of
Italy did It In a seaplane last
year. Howard Hughes, American
movie producer, oil scion, and
flyer, turned In 352.388 In an air
plane last year for the world
rrrnrrt. Why are seaplones faster
than Innn planes? Simply because
a fast plane has stubby wings,
and little maneuverability. A land
plane that can do 300 miles an
hour or more lands at a terrific
pure, and It Is rllfMcnli to bring
Ihcm down on the available fields.
A seaplane, nn the other hand,
can find long stretches of aqua
any place In the world and doesn't
have to worry about a landing
spot. The same Is true of the
take-off. The wings are so short
that they haven't much lift, and
It tnkes a long run before they
lift.

An antelope Is rated the taswai

Is the fact that a camel, usually pic

Three horses, unofficially clocked over
the mile In England at 1 :32.4-5, were
galloping at 43 miles an hour. A grey

While humans can't hustle tneir

can move parts of their bodies In
quite a hurry. For Instance Jack

traveled nine or ten Inches, stesmed

at 137.

The particular bird which did that
was an American duck hawk. It loafs
