But Josephine held the thin little
wrist.
"You'll look at me and you'll Ha

Ella stood and looked down at
Josephine's white, atrong band on
her wrist aa It It were a apeck ot

That came before everything." ahe

"Do yon think I'd try to convince
a fanatic?" aald Josephine with an
edge of contempt on ber voice.
"That's not what you're to listen to.

If you aak politely. That's all, now

She released Miss Ella's wrist.
"You are quite through. WHIT If
sot, I'll come back later," Ella aald,
taking no notice of anything Pblna
had aald. Phlna might hare been a
scolding servant-maid. 8he went
quietly out without the tray,
smoothing down her cuff where
Phlna had rumpled It
"Josle, my dear, you ahouldn't

your old storma." aald Dncle Will.

lady Iris bad eeen Brat and aat down
In the cbalr by the bed.
"Very welt Wilt It's Idlotlo to
lose one's temper, but rather pleas

I came for."
IRIS, limp from the brushing wings
of the storm, moved unseen from
the doorway. Owen waa no longer
with Morgan In the email room at
the etalrhead. Morgan waa alttlng
there alona with a moody face. He
rose and came to her Impetuously.
"So you're going to let them sell
It to him?" Morgan demanded with
a darkening face.
"Morgan, how can youT" Iris pro
tested. It did aeem to her that one
icene waa enough. "You talk almost
aa If you hated me."
"Hale you?" Morgan said passion
ately. "That'a Just tha trouble, I
wish I did bate you. Here, wa might
is well have It out"
He drew ber Into the queer little
room at the stairhead, once prob
ably a eewlng room whence the
mistress of the house could watch
ber maids aa ahe worked. He ehut
the doors, and put a band on her
silk-sleeved arm. Hla force was more
than the pbyalcal bold. She had been
poised to escape, but ahe found her
self meekly waiting.
"I came here." he went on, "after
going through an experience never
mind what happened. I wasn't to
blame. But the gtrl I'd believed in,
bad thought honestly loving she
threw me over. My friends, that I
thought had liked me for myself,
nearly all walked out on me. I aald
good-by to the only two people who
did care, and walked out . . .
came here, finally. 1 didn't be
lieve In anything or anybody, any

and you. Honest Innocent unselfish
people who would rather give than

"And by the time 1 waa that far l

you'll atay here and marry me you
won't ever have to dress badly or
go without normal little pleasures.
I'll spend my life trying to make
you happy. I love you. 1 I need you.
You're my faltb In girls. Stay here.
Marry me."
She stared up at hla dark, excited
face. She had grown to care for
Morgan, to be grateful to him (or
the way he had atood by them
through trouble. But marry him?
Marry thla strange moody man who
terrified her aometlmea, whom ahe
had grown to care for without think
ing whether It waa brotherly or
what? What ahe found to answer
sounded Inadequate.
I I never thought about any of
that."
"Think then. Iris darling Iris I"
But before ahe could say more.
before abe had time to more than
move away from blm, Phina'a taut
tailor-made figure stood at the door.
Your uncle wanta to apeak to
you, my dear, ehe aald; and the
moment was over which might have
made Iris yield.
Uncle Will spoke quietly.
"Your aunt and 1 have been dis
cussing your future, dear," be aald.
She wants you to go with ber. I
have no right to Influence your de
cision. Decide what Is best and hap
piest for yourself. Both of us will
alwaya love you Just the same."
A DNT Josephine, who had done
everything possible to Influence
Iris's decision, waited like a sen
tinel. Owen had reappeared and aat
motionless by the window, aa honor
ably neutral aa Uncle Will, but hla
eager face apoke tor him. Iris stood
silent (or a long two minutes.
"Which la It Iris?" Owen aald
eagerly.
Oh, Uncle Will!" She ran over to
the bed and threw her arms tight
round his sagging shoulders. "If you
say ao I'll atay I"
'But what do want to do, dear?"
'Owens my own brother," she I
said pleadingly, "And I would like
aome of the plenaurea and palacea."
She looked at blm with awe;, ahe
had Juat aeen blm going through the
sort of scene one doesn't aasoclate
with one's elders. "Bu If you want
me if you need me. dear I'll atay."
He ahook hla head. "No. You're
right you should go with your
brother tor a while at least And
waan't (air to you. Josle. I see It
now. Perhapa It will make up a little

Phlna, alight with triumph.

"Come upstairs." ahe aald, "I must
see what you can take with you.
Not much, I imagine."

third floor, when Morgan, atlll

stairhead, caught her wrlat
"Listen to me. Iris," be aald pas
slonately. "I'm not talking about
myself now, I'm not being selfish.
I'm talking about you. You've lived
a stranger, more unworldly life than
you know, here with a couple ol
romantic elderly people. You've
seen a tew village boya and girls.
Tha world your aunt'a taking you to
Isn't Ilka that"
"You aound aa If I were going to
darkest Africa among the eavagea,"
Iris aald lightly, her eyes alight with
the excitement of her coming Jour

Phlna and Owen. I can take care ol
myself. If I can't I'll write and tell
you."
"Then you won't stay either foi
me or yourself?"
Iris' temper that honeat, brush
wood flame that flashed up and was
down again In a half minute flared.
"I'm going! And I'll win out! And
that'a all there la to that!'' ahe said.
She turued and followed her aunt
