afforded some clue as to the course
taken In the elections by the LaFol
lette progressives, who had no ticket
of their own.
The results Indicated the progres
sives unhampered by any state elec
tion law which would prevent their
doing so, split up their support, giv
ing most of It to Roosevelt who has
been friendly to them.
Progressive leaders had no com
ment today.
Borah Satisfied
Senator Borah In a statement at
Chicago regarded the Wisconsin re
sult as highly satisfactory and said
"if we can have an untrammeled ex
pression of the people of Illinois we
will do the same thing here April
14."
In a close fought contest. Mayor
Daniel W. Hoan, Milwaukee's socialist
executive, was returned to office, de
feating Sheriff Joseph H. Shinners,
nonpartisan.
The progressives had no advice
from their leadership. Gov. Philip F.
La Follette, remained silent In his
few pre -campaign statements except
to say he would support Roosevelt
unless the republicans nominated
better man or no satisfactory third
party candidate appeared.
The Socialists' proposal for city pur
chase of the Milwaukee Electric com
pany's power distribution system ap
parently was defeated. Returns from
311 precincts showed 81,986 votes were
cast In opposition as against 61,020
for It.
Progrealvea were able to throw
their support where they wished, be
cause of Wisconsin's election laws
which provide that voters may select
any party ballot they wish with no
prior registration In that party necessary.
GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE
WILL START AT NOON
Observing, with hymns, prayers and
short addresses, the three traditional
hours that Jesus Christ suffered on
the cross. Good Friday services will
be held at St. Mark's Episcopal
church, beginning Friday noon and
continuing until 3 o'clock, the Rev.
E. 8, Battlam announced this week.
The services will be divided Into
seven periods, each consisting of
hymns, prayers and a short address,
devoted to one of the last words ut
tered by the Lord on the cross.
The holy devotions Is will not be
morbid, through emphasis upon the
sufferings of the Lord, but will be
designed for helpfulness in every day
living, Father Bartlam explained.
An invitation to come to the church
for this Inspiring observance of Good
Friday is extended to all persons who
wish to worship. Those unable to
come for the whole three-hour period
are Invited to attend any one of the
seven periods. The services are so ar
ranged aa to enable people to leave
at the close of any one period. Those
who are not granted a holiday on
Good Friday will be able to come to
the church during the noon hour.
Revival of Good Friday services at
St. Mark's church was accomplished by
the Rev. Bartlam In 1034. The holy
devotlonals are among the most sa
cred events of Holy Week and bring
a greater understanding of the com
memoration of the Joyous Easter day
to all who participate In the services.
