SAFETY SHOW TO
BE STAGED HERE
2
The action jet the Montgomery
Ward Safety Show, . aoheduled for
Tuesday, April 7th at 2:30 p. m., on
Fir etreet between Main and Eighth
la thrilling In Its nature and varied
In the lessons which it teaches, ac
cording to H. L. Brown, Ward store
manager, who dlscuased the ahow In
detail today. '
The ahow will begin with a parade
atoning at O. E. Gates Auto company
and ending at the acene of the ahow.
In the parade will be the police escort
and two stock cars driven by the
well known racing drivers. Ous Schra
der and Lew Brown. Their racing
cars will be towed behind the etock
cars on trailers. These will be fol
lowed by Perl's ambulance for use In
the final dramatic scene of the
show.
The two drivers will then go Into
action of the show. One act will ahow,
by definite marks on the street, the
difference In time required to atop
a car at 40 mllea an hour and at
thirty. Stunts showing wrong and
right ways to park a car provide near
collisions aa does a left hand turn
Into an alley. A similar bit of action
at a spot marked aa the top of a
hill shows a narrow escape aa three
cars meet on a hill with Inches to
spare.
Other acta In the ahow Include
a demonstration of correct algnallng
with Schrader wearing a long, white,
arm length glove,- "Tunnel" vision,
or the inability to see them from
the corners of the eyes la graphically
shown by a pair of bllndera worn by
one of the drivers. In thla perfor
mance a man acting the part of
pedestrian le very nearly atruck by
the car.
The astounding effect of a small
amount of alcohol on a driver it
shown by Brown who, after a email'
drink, knocka down posta placed In
the street se he swerves along. Schrad
er aa the sober driver, performs a
teat of careful and skillful driving
which enables ' him to avoid these
same obstacles which have crashed
under Browne wheele.
One stunt, with pistols measuring
the amount of tlmo required by a
driver between the time he eeea a
danger warning and the time he atepa
on the brake, offers an opportunity
for selected persona from among the
onlookers to compete with the racing
drivers. Pistols tired at the time the
danger signal Is given end at the
time the brake la pressed mark the
street with red spote which meas
ure the distance travelled in that
Interval. A man and a woman from
among the onlookers are chosen to
drive the cars and to see whether
they can make their red marka on
the pavement cloeer together than
Schrader can. The store manager
warned that Schroder's record la very
good.
The finale of the ahow la perhapa
the moat dramatic, according to the
statement made today. In this per
formance, Brown !mpercnat!n3
"Amertca'a Moat Oareleea Driver,"
performs a very realistic bit cf "reck
less" driving which la really very
carefully planned and perfectly tim
ed. This bit of acting leaves the on
lookers with a very real Impression
that a pedestrian has been actually
hit and Injured. Fallowing the "acci
dent" an ambulance arrives and car
rles away the "victim." aa Jack Story,
the announcer of the show, warns
the crowds against euch recklessness.
Story, nationally known announcer,
who announced the national elr races
in Cleveland last year and the All
American air races In Miami, Fla.,
last December, provides exciting and
Interesting comment on the entire
performance from first to last,
