vent unjust discrimination In favor
of chain stores. The broad prlce-flx-log
Implications of the original bill
will be eliminated.
A drawing room story la going the
rounds. You will hear It If you have
not already. It Implies that Senator
Borah may be expected to take his
foot bull and go over to the Roose
velt side after the Republican con
vention. That Is, He Is expected to
accumulate sufficient po
litical strength In his current cam
paign to become a major Influence
In the Roosevelt second term by ft

The yarn was probably Invented
by Borah's opponents to shake Re
publican confidence In him. but
lot of well Informed persons expect
It to come true.
Republican authorities have be
come somewhat more disturbed about
the Borah candidacy during the last
few days. The promised Townaend
support for the Idahoan Is what did
It. However, the general inside lav
presslon here Is that the Townsend
movement Is near the breaking point.
Within 80 days, the house investi
gating committee expects to develop
evidence injurious to Townsend po
litical prestige.
The resignation of Robert Clements
as secretary and treasurer of the
Townsend organization Is supposed
to have been a maneuver la antici
pation of house evidence.
If everything works out as bouse
Investigators expect, the Townsend
support will hardly be an asset to the
Borah candidacy.
Society and Clubs
By Janet Wray Smith
Strategists of both political parties
are quietly getting ready to make
the ether sizzle during the camplagn.
It Is not ready- for announcement
yet, but Claude Bowers will be
brought back from Spain to take a
big position at the Democratic micro
phone. The ambassador won a repu
tation as a Jeffersontan Cloero while
keynoter at two conventions.
Republicans also are beginning to
line up talent. One ether artist they
have In mind la a nationally un
known official of a large life Insur
ance company In New York (not
Hoover). They would also like to
have Lewis Douglas, Ohio's Attorney
Oeneral Brlcker and President Olenn
Prank of Wisconsin university.
You haven't heard anything yet.
A Democratic leader Is expressing
the opinion to friends thst Presi
dent Roosevelt could elect himself
j at one stroke by getting rid of three
of his associates. You should be able
I to guess their names. If you can
j not, look at the last sentence of these
notes.
Personal Interests Involved In the
I chain store fight are disclosed by the
fact that the Robinson-Pa tirum bill
i waa written by H. B. Teegarten,
counsel of the U. S. Wholesale Oro
' cers association, and the Borah-Van
I Nuys bill by the retailers. Appar
ently It has never occurred to any
one to have a bill written by a rep
resentative of the housewife.
