HOUSE
A Good Example of Simple Formal
Treatment on a Small Lot
Perhaps most gardening beginners,
asked whether they prefer a formal
or a naturalistic planting, will favor
the natural.. To them the charm of
gardening Is associated with enjoy
ment of the country and natural
landscape beauty. " r
Even tn a small city or suburban
home grounds, they may be Inclined
to attempt a naturalistic planting,
hoping to reproduce lit a limited
area, shut In by houses, streets and
fences, a picture of untrammeled na
ture. And here they may encounter
difficulty.
It Is a principle of design that a
gerden must harmonize with Its
surroundings; and It Is obviously
difficult to create a naturalistic pio-
All the family can Join In the delight or growing a ear
den . . . and certainly all the family will profit by Its
completion, and rel In Its beauty. For the children
there will be outdoor play and sunshine, and the most
beautiful way to learn of the wonders of nature. For
the jcrown folks there will be exhlleratlng exerclM and
the delight of creating crowing things. Make yours a
gardening family, and you will have a healthier, happier
faintly than everl
Formal Design Good for
Small Home Plantings
ture in a location where there are
so many buildings, barriers, and
artificial objects Intruding upon the
background.
For this reason, formal layout
should always be considered for small
home grounds; and In most cases
they are likely to be most satisfac
tory. A formal layout does not re
quire that flowers shall be arranged
in carpet beds, or tnmmed out 01
their natural grace and beauty. For
mal gardens In which flowers are
arranged Informally and allowed to
grow naturally are preferred the
days.
The design Is concerned with the
paths, beds and borders; and with
the accents and focal points, it
should be related to the house de
sign. The entrance from the house
to the garden Is important and im
portant windows should look out
upon attractive vistas.
A point which must always be
considered Is aspect; that Is, the
relation of each part of the garden
to the sunshine which falls upon it.
A design which provides for flower
beds in the deep shade and a ter
race In the full sun. will hardly
satisfy. Symmetrical layout will
often do this, and there should be
no hesitancy In departing from sym
metry even In a formal garden. In
order to give the flowers the full
sun and provide for one border of
generous size rather than two skimpy
ones.
But In discarding symmetry, do
not fall to create a balance in the
garden picture. The rules for gar
den design are the same as for other
forms of pictorial composition. A
simple design, harmonizing with Its
surroundings, with one principal
focal point, and two or more seo
ondary accents, with the flowers
growing In the sun and a place
where visitors can sit In comfort in
the shade this will provide a frame
work which you may fill tn with
floral beauty to your heart's content.
grown In the sunshine they will
grow rapidly and develop plants In
a very short time.
Outstanding varieties Include pink
triumph, California giants. Elks pride,
ruffled giants, new dwp.rf g!ts ftd
others. Balcony petunias are tall
trailing sorts which may be trained
on a trellis to provide a very beau
tiful display. All of thesa varieties
are available at dealers in dated
packets to assure freshness.
Nasturtium Golden Globe
Is Fine Dwarf Yellow
Lovers of fragrant garden flowers
will bo pleased with nasturtium,
golden globe, a new addition to the
gleam family and the first named
color variety of the gem type of
nasturtium. It won an all-Ameiica
award of merit for 1936. and will be
Justly popular with flower growers
for years to come.
This delicately scented subject Is
uniformly dwarf and compact, and
suggests many usea In the garden.
Ito deep golden yellow has a warm
and mellow appearance which should
make It welcome alone or In com
pany with other colors. In the win
dow box It has the advantage or
small stature, as well as fragrance,
and It Is said to run as true to
type as the golden gleams.
Nasturtiums are the Ideal flower
for the gardener with poor soil. They
will grow almost anywhere, with
small amount of attention. For dry.
sandy or gravelly . locations they
cannot be beat, although they will
respond and produce larger growths
when well supplied with water. It
Is a good Idea to watch this need
where climbing or trailing types are
planted. In the case of the dwarfs,
plant them on poor soli, if possible,
as they have a tendency to run to

leaves at the expense of bloom on
richer soils.
One of the charming features of
the nasturtium Is the mingling, of
flowers and leaves. This eifect can
be imitated very easily In arrange
ments for the house if you win cut
both and closely follow the original
stand.
They make showy beds, and the
dwarf types. Including golden globe,
are good edgings. The tall ones arc
really sprawling In habit, but may
be easily trained to climb a trellis
or wall fitted with wire of lattice
wdrk by tying the vines. As they
have no tendrils, they will not climb
without support.

Petunias Are Easy v
To Grow; Are Ideal
For Flower Garden
There Is no more gladdening sight
than a bed of lovely petunias. Their
combination of color, form and tex
ture Immediately arrests the atten
tion of the flower lover. They are
always fresh snd attractive and they
are in great variety, from the dou
ble sorts which are frequently grown
as pot plants, as well aa-ln the material. Kept thoroughly moist; the
garden. Including those fringed and seed, will germinate readily and If
ruffled, large flowered ones, to the
single trailing or border types which
may be seen growing on the hillside
and along the highways, where they
receive little attention.
The seeds of petunias are very
small and should be sown In flats
for later transplanting, mixing the
seed with sand to give a better dis
tribution. Fill a flat with good loamy
soil, press and smooth the surface.
Broadcast the seed and cover lightly
with a mulch of peat humus, fine
screened leaf mold -or some similar
Getting Hid of Weeds In Vour Lawn
I Know lots of folks have given up
hope of ever having a weedless lawn
And . If I try to tell tnem uiai
they really can have one they're
likely not to believe me. But the
treatment I'm going to prescribe has
cured lets of lawns that their ownera
had given up as lost, and I certainly
want to urge you. to give It a lair
trial.
In trying to get rid of weeda, the
first thing to consider la thla. A
weed and a grass plant Just natu
rally enn't grow on the same Identr
cal spot. If you have, enough grass
plants. If your turf Is thick, enougn
the weeds can't get atarted. But
when your grass Is thin, when It
doesn't completely cover the ground.
every little spot of bare soil prac
tically invites weed seeds to ligni
and grow. And you know you can't
keep weed seeds off your place; every
breeze brings In a crowd of tnem
So you see why It Is that If your
grass get thin you're sure to have
a healthy crop of dandellona and
plantains and other pests.
The real answer to this thin grass
problem and consequently to the
weed problem Is proper feeding. Be.
csuse a thin, weedy lawn Is a half
starved lawn, almost every time.
Here's why.
All through the growing season
your grass oots are constantly
drawing eleven different food ele
ments from the soil, and every sin
gle one of these elements Is neces
sary for healthy growth. If you let
even one of them become exhausted
from the soli, you're headed for
trouble. Just like a child on an In
complete diet, your grass will be
come thin and sickly, will begin to
die out. And right then the weeds
get going I Bo the first and by far
the most Important step. In con
trolling weeds Is to make sure that
your grass has all eleven of these
needed food elements. '
"Very good." you say, "It sounds
like a great Idea. But how about the
weed roots that are already In my
soli. Just waiting to spring up and
spoil my lawn?" Weil, the answer
is exactly the samel You aee, grass
roots atart growing) earlier In the
spring than weed root do. If you
Klve your lawn a good square meal
early enough Just as soon as frost
Is out of the ground It will give
your grsss a great big head atart
over the weeds. And later, wnen
weeds weeds do cron up, your grass
should be growing so strongly that
lots of weeds will find no room to
grow: they'll be choked out.
Now, or- course, I wouldn't want
to promise that early feeding will
make the grass choke out all the
weeds In one season. But If you do It
right, and do It early enough, It will
cut the number down so greatly
that you'll feel like going after the
rest by hand.
But remember to be effective. It
must be done Just as soon as frost
Is out of the ground. And remember,
too. that Just any old plant food
wont do. Manurea, for Instsnce,
actually contain weed seeds, and
putting them on your lawn Just
IN gardening as In Christmas shop
ping an early start la Important.
Sise- up your garden plot now to
determine what can be done to Im
prove the soil.
Spade or plow early. If a handful
ot soil gripped firmly can be crum
bled readily upon release, the soil
Is In condition to be plowed or
spaded. If the handful of eoll does
not crumble readily but remains
packed, put off the Job until a later
day.
Any soil Is enriched by manure.
Clay soils are improved In texture
and sandy soils are Improved la
water holding capacity by spading
under manure, rotted leaves or lawn
clippings or rotted garden refuse.
Complete commercial (ertllixera
are everywhere available. - Ask for
a "4-13-6" or similar mixture. Broad
cast and. rake In about four pounds
ot this per square rod Just before
planting.
It is Importaut that fertilizer be
used cautiously, for an excess Is
often harmful, particularly when
-dealing with production of fruits,
that Is, tomato, cucumber, pepper,
etc.
Garden - preparation effort is
wasted If you do not plant seeds
from dependable sources. Select
your favorite varieties at the nearby
store before the supply Is depleted.
Make sure they are freshly packed.
To gardeners who also like . to
maintain an excellent lawn easi
ness of renewal again Is Important
Take advantage ot a comparatively
warm, early spring day when, the
surface Is almost bare and the ale
is calm.
Sow about a teacupful ot seed to
100 square feet of lawn. Melting
snow carries the seed Into the soil
and subsequent light snows will be
beneficial. Tender seedlings thus get
a good start before the days become
too warm.
If you have a vacant lot next
door, or other apace nearby, grow a
vegetable garden. A plot 30x50 feet
will provide most medium sized
families with all the fresh .vegetables
they can est, with plenty left over
for canning.
