WASHINGTON (UP) Stephen Col
lin Foster, moat famous of North
American composers, la to be Intro
duced to music lovers abroad as re
sult of Inter-American musical en
thusiasm fostered by the Pan-American
Union.
Faster Is the best loved of Amer
ican song writers because of his four
great songs which reflected kindly
sentiment of old plantation days In
the south and Inspired American
pioneers In their trek Into the west
ern plslns and deserts.
Among dozens of songs which he
wrote prior to his death at New York
In 1864, those best known are "Way
Down Upon de Swanee Rlbber," "My
Old Kentucky Home.' "Massaa In de
Cold. Cold Ground" snd "Old Black
Joe." Another of his hits, "Oh I Su
sanna," attained modern popularity
as the theme song In the western
pioneer epic of the films, "The Cov
ered Wagon." '
Through the talent of Lulz Guz
man, a Colombian by birth, now
member of the United States ma
rine band, 20 of the best Foster
melodies have been selected and ar
ranged 'for concert band. As result
of the beneficence and enthusiasm
of Josiah Klrby Lilly, manufacturer
of. Indianapolis, Xnd.. 500 sets of the
"Stephen Foster Melodies," for 17-
plece bands, are about to be circu
lated to musical organization
throughout Latin America.
The movement to Introduce Ste
phen Poster abroad reciprocates the
general contributions made by mu
sicians of the southern republic to
this country for popularization
through a series of Pan-American
Union concerts. These frequently
were nationally and Internationally
broadcast.
The movement for Pan-American
musical co-operation la credited here
In large part to Franklin Adams,
former counsellor of the union, him
self a musician, who for 25 years
spared no effort to popularize work
of the best Latin American -nosers
In the United States. Adams,
now retired, resides at Athens,
Greece.
The internationalization of Ste
phen Foster Is said to be the result
of a suggestion by Adams. Ully. an
ardent sdmlrer of Foster, wrote to
the pan-American Union asking that
a biography of the composer be ae-
poslted In the union imrsry.
Adams, alert to musical posslbill.
ties, countered with a suggestion
.that Foster's music be arranged for
the use of United States service
bands and Latin American organiza
tions which are participating In, the
Pan American musical movement,
Lilly replied favorably and Luis Guz
man, a distinguished composer, un
dertook the technical work.
A beautifully printed series of pub
liestions. the "Stephen Foster Mel
odles," is dedicated to Lilly, "whose
generosity and love for Foster's
tongs made possible the presentation
of this medley." On back of the
music Is a biographical sketch of
Foster In the Spanish language.

ITHA, N. Y. (UP) Cornell uni
versity has a collection of 6000 hand
bllle which trace the history of the
American theater from 1795 to 1905.
The collection was willed to the
university by the late Benno Loo we y.
a lawyer and bibliophile of Mew York
City.
At best & sketchy one. the history
of the American stage Is traced In as
complete detail as possible, according
to Dr. 0to Klnkeldey. Cornell's li
brarian. The bills represent early
theaters of virtually every old Ameri
can city, and a majority deal with
the pre-Vlctorlan and Victorian play
houses of England and the United
States.
The handbills will be available to
research students when their ar
rangement Is completed. Dr. Klnkel
dey announced. They fill five large
wooden chests.
Among the earliest bills In the col
lection is one dated January 5, 1795,
and which comes from a New York
playhouse. The dodger Is merely en
tiled "Theatre" no other name of
the playhouse is given. It offers "the
very popular opera of the 'Haunted
Tower performed by the Old Ameri
can Company in Philadelphia with
unbounded applause."
To pad out the evening, a comedy
In three acts called the "Midnight
Hour" was also scheduled. For these
performances box seats sold for eight
shillings, pit seats for six shillings
and gallery seats for four shillings.
The curtain waa scheduled to
rise at 6:16 p. m., but In bold type
dodger advised "ladles and gentlemen
to send their servants at 5 o'clock
to keep their places."
Then, with Irrelevant gusto, came
a "vlvat Respubllca!" (long live the
republic) In the lower right-hand
corner.
"Buy American" even was popular
In 1834.
On a handbill for the American
theater. Bowery, New York City, dat
ed August 11, Is the statement: "The
public is respectfully Informed that
this establishment will reopen for the
season this evening, August 11, when
It Is the Intention of the-manager to
pursue more diligently than ever the
same course he adopted at the com
mencement of his managerial career
four years ago, the encouragement
and promotion of native American
talent."
The bill then advertises the forth
coming presentation of "Vlrglnlus," a
tragedy. The star of the piece was
one Herr Cllne, a Swiss. Immedi
ately after the performance, and for
the gratification of one and all, Herr
Cllne was to present "a study of all
the human passions," In an amazing
routine of gymnastics." The versatile
Cllne was then to wind up the merry
evening by giving his "famous Swiss
Wooden Shoe Dance."
The American theater In New York
believed in giving its patrons their
money's worth. One bill from this
establishment presents this bounteous
fare: 'Pour acts of the Merchant of
Venice; a solo on the flute by Mr.
Cuddy, who will Introduce several
popular Irish airs; the popular ex
travaganza of 'Zip Coon," by. Mr.
Bob Farrell; after which a new farce
written by a gentleman of this city
and called the 'Removal of the De
posited' will be presented." The eve
ning was to wind up with the "Forest
of Bondy, or the Dog of Monteargls."
Through the Civil War, nothing of
the sinking of the nation's spirit was
reflected in the theater. There was
no departure from the policies of the
"noisy thirties."
But by 1865 grand opera was edg
tgn Its wcy In ever so slightly. On
December 2, Meyerbeer's 'L'Afrlcalne"
saw its second night In America at
the New York Academy of Music.
In the Civil War dodgers such no
tices as "the free list is entirely sus
pended with the exception of the
press' were common.
Anniversary programs of colored
satin were the vogue for the 100th
performance of a play. One beautlfu
program of yellow and green brocade
told patrons that Lawrence Barrett,
as Cat us Casslus, had been starred for
the hundredth consecutive time In
"Julius Caesar" at Booth's theater on
December 27. 1875.
HERE ARE THE REAL
FACTS ABOUT BRAN
Brought Out by Testa -with
Kellogg's All-Bran
Some years ago, there was consid
erable difference of opinion regard
ing the use of bran. So to discover
the actual facta of the case, the
Kellogg Company asked for a
series of laboratory testa at lead
ing universities.
Experimental studies on a group
of healthy women showed that the
continued use of bran was thor
oughly satisfactory. Unlike ca
thartics, it did not lose its effect.
Other Independent tests on men
indicated that, with certain people,
the "bulk" in bran was more effec
tive than that found in fruits and
vegetables.
Laboratory analysis proved that
Kellogg's All-Bran supplied vita
min B and iron as well as plenty
of bulk. This "bulk" In All-Bran
is gentle in action. It absorbs a
great deal of moisture, and
cleanses the intestinal tract.
All-Bran corrects constipation
due to insufficient "bulk." It is the
natural way far better than us
ing pills and tablets.
Serve as a cereal
or use in cooking.
Sold by all grocers.
Made by Kellogg in
Battle Creek.
