YALE POLITICAL
UNION ATTRACTS
WIDE ATTENTION
NaTW RAVEN, Conn. (UP) The
Yale Political Union, although little
more than a year old .has attracted
International attention and eventual
ly may be the portal through which
more college men will enter politics
than In many years.
The membership of the union,
while proponderately liberal, la not
made up exclusively of that school of
thought. Like the English house of
parliament, the constituency of about
130 students Is composed of conserva
tives, liberals and radicals.
This union Is unique In university
annals In America, and Is patterned
largely upon the Oxford and Cam
bridge unions of which many Eng
lish statesmen have been members.
Stanley Baldwin and Sir Anthony
Fden were members at their respec
tive colleges.
The union alms to give under-grad-
uates a taste of politics, to stimulate.
In the words of Potter Stewart, one
of Its members, "undergraduates along
the Unas of political activity, so that
at least some of the members may
go Into politics after graduation."
"Formation of the Vale Union,"
says Stewart. "Is a direct challenge
to those who have pointed out the
complete Inability of schools to pre
pare for political life. We hope to
train the college youth for politics."
President James Rowland Angell
called the union the most significant
extra curriculum development In his
administration, and President Roose
velt and others have commended the
project.
Pounders of the union were Max
Ml 111 ken, son of the fsmous Califor
nia scientist, now at Cambridge, who
was its first prealdent. and a conser
vative; August Heckscher II, grand
son of the New York capital tit: Jona
than Bingham who, when editor of
the Yale Newa. shocked university cir
cles when he advocated that Yale give
courses in Communism and Fascism,
and Richard Moore of Brooklyn, man
aging editor of the Yale News. Heck
scher. Moore, and Bingham were dis
tinctly liberal so that It might be
said that the membership of 130 Is
largely controlled by the liberal ele
ment. Another prominent member of the
union, Whltelew Retd of Nw York.
son of Ogden Reld, of the New York
Hers Id -Tribune, Is a conservative.
The liberal viewpoint Is defended
by Stewart, editor of the Yale News,
who says that they have their own
Ideas and think out things for them
selves, "Thualy, there cannot fall to i
be a tinge, even an entire dyeing In
liberal Iran," he added. Stewart is a
New Dealer.
There are those who view the po
tentialities of the union with inter
est. The Institution of the union un
doubtedly means a greater interest
In government and Its problems, a
keener political consciousness on the
part of Yale students.
When Jack London, Invited to Tate
as guest of the few under-graduate
Socialists, he was nearly thrown out
of Woolsey Hall. There has been a
vast change In sentiment since that
time.

STONE-AGE MAN
IN SEQUOIA PARK
SrQUOIA PARK. Csl. (UP) One
million years ago, when the Java
ape-man existed, this section of Cali
fornia already was occupied by a
primeval race capable of making atone
utensils.
That la the conclusion that ha
Just been made public by Walter Fry,
United States commissioner of Se
quoia park, and Dr. Francois Matttiea,
noted geologist.
Although the Java ape-man la re
garded as the oldest known human
link, there la every Indication, the
two scientists assert, that a mild,
more humanized type of man existed
at that time In Tulare county, Cali
fornia. The conclusions of the two men
are based on the existence at Atwell
Mill and Olant Forest of a number
of giant etone basins In some cssei
four feet in diameter and from two
to four feet deep.
It has been proven to the satis
faction of scientists that these could
not have been formed by the action
of water, nor have any grinding tools
with which they mlglit have been
made ever been found. All theories
as to their possible use have been
discarded.
However, the most Important dia
covery In connection with them,
made by Dr. Fry, la the presence of
sn inch of encrusted volcanic ash
In two of them that were lying ex
posed to this material.
The youngest volcano mountain In
or near Tulare county la a cone near
Golden Trout creek, but which, ac
cording to Dr. Matthea, could only
have had Ita last period of activity
over a million years ago.
The conclusions of tha two scien
tists are that the basins could only
have been made by a primeval people)
living here a million years ago. These
baalna exist only In the Sequoia belt
of Tulare county.
