CHICK AND JONES
WRESTLE MONDAY
It will be wile against brute force,
guile against slugging, and experi
ence against hot headednesa on the
main event of next Monday's main
event wrestling bout at the Armory,
when Al Karaslck, the Russian Lton,
matches his skill against Ken Hollls,
the battering Oaf of the Ozark.
The Hollls type Wrestler Is con
sidered an excellent foil for the
Karaslck attack, the Russian rely
ing upon a seeming woo tineas to
lead his opponent into some rath
act, and then coming out of the
feigned coma to flatten the rash
one with well directed fist or
knee. The two have never met In
the local ring, but Medford fans
themselves asked Promoter Mack LIU
lard to arrange the bout, he aald
today in announcing the lineup.
The middle main event will fea
ture Dude Chick, powerful and clever
ex-rodeo rider, against Btanley Rog
ers, leathery Texan. Rogers wen over
Mike Caddock In the evening opener
last Monday, and has begged LHlord
for a try against Chick. Of the old
school, Rogers possesses no spec
tacular holds such as are In the
Chick bag of tricks, so depends on
straight wrestling. Including hammer
locks and scissor holds, to beat an
opponent down.
Mike Caddock, rough house artist
who ended his last match black in
the face from an effective bit of
hanging, Instigated by Referee Ray
Frlsble with a towel, will meet
newcomer to Medford In the opener.
The new man Is Dr. Barney Cosneck.
Ph.D., frcm the University of 111!
nols. Young and good-looking, the
Jewish man ts said to be clean, fast
and aggressive, and knows wrestling
from both ends. Seldom relying on
dirty work because his straight stuff
generally proves efficacious, Ccsneck
can get rough when he has to,- Lll
Jard said.
The opener and the middle event
will be under the Australian system.
VAHCOUVER, B. C March 13
(AP) Barney Ross, world welter
weight champion, held a 10-round
decision today over Gordon Wallace,
Canadian tltleholder, who almost
fell by the wayside In the last round
of their overweight, non-champlon
ship fight.
The champion from Chicago with
stood the best Wallace had to offer
and finished strong holding up the
Canadian and driving uppercuta to
the chin and stomach.
Rcss. 143 ft, gave away five Inches
In reach and 8 ft pounda to Wallace
who entered the ring at 148.
Music sheets of rubber will be used
for the Olymplo games In Berlin next
summer as a precaution against bad
weather.

The basketball season la over tor I
the Medford high school. The season, i
all In all, was truly a successful one,
with only five defeats. It la an un
usual basketball team Indeed which
gets through a season with only five
defeats. It will be remembered that
the almost miraculous string of vic
tories turned In by the University
of Washington team, hailed as tin
greatest squad ever to come out of
the northwest, was broken by defeats
at the hands of Idaho and Washing
tor State.
When It Is considered that only
two of the Medford players. Van
Dyke and Lewis, were rated as real
basketball players at the start of
the season, the record of the Ti
gers becomes even more Impres
sive. The annual gloom over next
year's prospects has already start
ed to fall, however. Lewis and
VanDyke will be gone after mid
year, and Bowerman will have to
build his squad around his Soph
omore Shocks, Including Hayes,
Santo, Grow, Ettlnger and the
rest. Little Red Child ers Is, un
less we miss our guess by a very
long way, going to be reckoned
among the first five next year.
Hayes, the long-legged, large-footed
center, haa Improved so vastly

Couch Bowerman has high hopes for
a similar Improvement beat year,

GOLD FISH GIVEN
PEP SUPPLY
OAKLAND, Csl, (VP) The reju
venation of gold fish by means of
the family washing machine will be
one . of the permanent contributions
to modern science of - the research
workers of the ' federal writers pro
ject of this city. '
The federal writers, In search 01
material for the great American
Guide Book, which they are to com
pile, visited a manufacturer of wash
ing machlnea. It developed the lat
ter had sold 10 machines to , the
proprietor of . a goUir'ah hntchery.
This . Incongruity sounded like real
material for ithe guide book.
They visited the gold fish hatch
ery, and this s what they learned:
It had been his custom when any-
one wanted a buy a gold fish to
provide the prospective purchaser
witfc a long-handled net and let
him catoh the particular onea that
struck hla fancy. The Idea also
proved great sport for the customers
But after a time, the proprietor
noticed that his ponds were rapidly
being depleted of all the young,
lively fish, while the old sluggish
ones who hsdn't enough pep left
in them to give his customers a
thrill In trying to catch them, re
mained. tJ
He decided that' perhaps the fault
lay In the nets: that they needed
cleaning to stimulate life In the
fish.
So he put several of them Into
the family washing maohlne. using
only plain , water and turning on
the -current ai a nveiy rate.
he waa about to take, out the nets,
U.hh hu4 hMIh .hat Ml. Of
the oldest gold fish was cavorting
about with the freshness of youth.
He immediately transferred tt back
to the pond and there It showed
even more life than when In the
washing machine.
The hatchery proprietor began to
study this strange situation. He rea.
soned that the gold fish, accidentally
put Into the washing machine, had
been obliged to buck the current of
the water. He had Jumped mlnla-,
ture water falls, he had breasted
small waves and strong currents, and.
getting back Into the current of .life
again, he had become his old self.
The old fish In the pond were put
through the same rejuvenating pro
osss; the gold fish Industry regained
lt youth.

A eevere case 01 the doldrums
clutchea the critics In England. ' In
their forecast of British golf proa
pects after the 1935 pounding by
American siege guns.
It leaves them sour and saddened.
"The amateur game Is still under
the domination of America.' be
moans one commentator, "and the
revival of British supremacy ao gal
lantly started by Henry Cotton In
1934 has not been maintained.
Don't auk, "What aupremaoyf It
simply Isn't done. The record reads:
1934 W. Hogon (U. 8. A.)
192f-J. Barnes (U; S. A.y
192ft Ri T. Jones (U. 8. A.)
1927 R T. Jones (U. 8. A.)
1928 W. Hagen (U. 8. A.)
1929 W. Hagen U. 8. A.)
1930 R. T. Jonee (U. 8. A.)
1931 T p. Armour (U.,6. A.)
1032 O. Sarazen (U. 8. A.)
1933 D. Shute (TJ. S. A.)
Caddish To Comment
And Judging from that roll call,
with Uncle Sam answering "Present!
for ten straight years. It may seem
that any British supremacy belongs
a long time ago.
But the subject la painful, over
there, and when anyone mentlona U
there is only one comment:
"By gad. Sir. The man Is a cad
he ought to be drummed out of his
club I"
Men have been drummed out of
their clubs for far less. You see them
In the Punjab, In Pago Pago, and In
pith helmets and knee-pantlea, very
bony outcasts, cut dead by any
Englishman worth his salt.
Actually, Cotton'a "revlval-of-sup-remacy"
feat In winning tha 1934,
British open title waa repeated by
hla dark-horse eompatrlot, Alfred
Perry, In 1938.
But the Brltlah amateur champ
ionship had already fallen under th
ah noting Irons of our own Lawsoa
Uttle. and It remained for the Ryder
Cup team almost blasted off the
course by Walter Hagen and hla co
horts at Rldgefleld, N. J., to make
the Merrle Isles ring with woe. '
' It's' All Very Oloomy
Gloom cracked down over the land.
British chroniclers of the golfing
wars took some cheer from the claim
that h absence of Cotton from the
Ryder Cup team, enforced by hla
residence on the continent, handl
capped the British- Invaders.
And apparently going hard on the
slogan that "Brltona never, never
shell be slaves," they wound up by
exulting that "Perry's open champ
ionship success. In a field which in
cluded eeveral leading American golf
ers, proved that we have the material
capable of restoring England to her
original leading place In the world
of golf."
But In the faoe of the chill facta
or 1930, they bleakly admit, there's
still a, long, long trail a-wlndlng.
