PERILS MAINTENANCE
OF'
BIO APPLBOATE, March 10.-(6pl.)
Wltb the matter of losing their school
district depending upon the outcome
of a eohool election at Wetlclna a few
days ago, keen interest rose In the
school affairs of the remote district,
every resident turning ' out to cast
bis vote on an Issue Involving trans
portation. A IS to 10 vote was cast tn favor ot
retaining the present fund for trans
porting the six pupils to the school,
wltb the result that the community
does not lose their district.
Since three or four years ago when
the school consisted of 38 pupils, the
district haa paid transportation of
pupils living at long distances, and
recently contention arose over the
ad visibility of paying this fee when
the attendance had fallen to six. With
ail of the pupils living In the Steam
boat vicinity, some as far away as 9
mkea, and unable to attend school
unless transported, the district. If
without Voholars for 30 days, would
have been relinquished to adjoining
districts of Thompson creek and Bea
ver creek.
' Although transportation still Is in
effect, maintenance of the school
still stands In danger owing to a new
school law requiting an average at
tendance of six, and parents feel that
Illness may lessen the average. The
situation now rests with the boun
dary board, however, and C. R. Bow
man, county supervisor, who was re
quested to attend the election to clear
up any legal technicalities which
might arise, said that the board
would be very lenient tn their con
siderations. Mrs, Ins Purosl Is teaching at We,t
kln at present, and having signed a
contract for the nine months' term,
will complete the remaining three
months of school.
