Jackson County Chamber of Com
merce Indicate how rapidly trees can
grow In the Rogue river valley. One Is
nine feet four inches tall, the other
nine feet one Inch. They represent
one year's growth from seed. They

third battalion, 186th infantry at the
Medford armory at 8 o'clock tomor
row night.
The. Inspection will be made by
Major Ro&rlua H. Back who is attach
ed to ROTC headquarters at the Uni
versity of Oregon. Eugene. - -
Major Back Is due to arrive here
tomorrow at noon. In the afternoon
he will Inspect property, equipment
and records at the armory and at 8
p. tn. he will Inspect both national
guard companies.
Regular weekly drills of both com
panies will be held In the armory to
night at 8. All members are request

LAKE PARK BEAR
COMPLETES SLEEP
The first Crater Lake national park
bear to emerge from winter hlberna
tlon was seen at the mountain re
sort yesterday. It waa reported today
by David H. Canfleld, superintendent,
upon his return from an Inspection
trip.
Mr. Canfleld expected the rest of
tha park's SO beara to follow the
leader within the next couple of
weeks. Aa the park Is still burled
in snow, the beara will probably fol
low precedent by wandering to the
lowlands for food, he predicted.
Mr. Canfleld said strenuous efforts
are being made to open the road from
park headquartera to the lake rlro.
While work la progressing satisfac
torily. It will take at least eight daya
more to clear the road for traffic, he
related.
Ice on the park roads is being
melted unevenly, Mr. Canfleld said,
and therefore motorists should drive
cautiously while In the park,. ,
