sponsored a cooking school foi this
district last Tuesday afternoon. This
was the first cooking school that has 1
ever been held In this district and
it was a decided auccess. There were
twenty-five ladies present and each
one could tooth see and hear air that
the demonstrator, Miss Marguerite
Penner, did and said. Two complete
meals were prepared and cooked and
many helpful suggestions given. The
different dishes were given by lot to
the ladles who were present.
The Upper Valley Community cluo
will hold It March meeting at the
club house Wednesday afternoon. The
program will be of unusual Interest.
Three Ashland ladles. Mrs. Fred Wag
ner. Mrs. Henry Oaley and Mrs. Wll
mer Poley, will present a play en
titled "Passion Versus Potatoes," by
Edna Stgglns Btrahan. Two vocal solos
will be given by Mrs. Edwin Dunn
and by Mrs. Taylor Williams. An ex
change of flower seeds, bulbs and
plants will be a part of the program
also. Mrs. Henry Stenrud, Mrs. Archie
Klncald and Mrs. A, O. Helns will
be the hostesses.
The hot lunches which have been
served for the paat three months to
the Bellview school children by the
Parent-Teacher circle were dlscontln

TOURISTS VEXED
BY STATE CHECK

type weed In the state and thought
It might be a good Idea to plant

A Bangor. Main, tourist was stop
ped at the Susanvllle station. He In
sisted he had no contraband plant
material or Insects with him. 1 His
bedding and tents, upon being shak
en out, yielded clover root weevil,
green lace wing larvae and cut
worm moths, all alive and doing well
despite the long trip from Maine.
Inspectors do not mind searching
the average tourist automobiles, bu
they shudder when they think of
small circuses that travel by truck.
Broad stretches of canvas must be
shaken out and a mass of equipment
inspected.
"Knights of the road" also cause
considerable work becauso each beii
roll must be examined.
Tourists with little baggage arc
subjected to brief delay, but when
they carry camping outfit, rolls of
bedding, or fellers loaded with hp
assortment of provisions, they mu.t
wait while the uniformed Inspectors
co through th equipment.
Arlsona has similar sttions. One
time a motorist who became tndig
nant at the California checking sta
tion weat of Yuma, Ariz., refused to
be searched and turned back, insist
ing he would go no further into
California. He was stopped by the
Arizona station and refused entrance
to that state without inspection. For
a time he was. figuratively speaking,
stranded on the Colorado river bridge
with no place to go.
THE GRANGE
Phoenix Grange
Phoenix Orange will meet In regu
lar session Tuesday night at 8:00
with a program put on by children or
the Phoenix school to which the

WASHINOTON (UP) The law now
reaches across most of the btate lines
throughout the country to ompel
psymeni of damages caused by non
resident motorists, according to a
report from the American Automo
bile association.
Residents of 43 states and the
District of Columbia now have the
protection of non-resident, srvlce-of-process
laws, the A. A. A. ktate
ment aald. Ten Jurisdictions have
adopted such legislation during the
past year and with the exception of
Colorado. Georgia, Missouri, Nevada
and Utah, the non-resident service
laws are now in effect throughout
the country.
"Prior to passage of the laws, the
injured party was forced to file suU
for damages In the state In which
the motorist causing the accident
wss resident," the report said. "The
difficulties and expense involved gen
erally presented Insuperable obstacles
With the non-resident servtce-of-process
law In effect, however, the
accused driver la forced to atiswet
the suit In the state in which tne
accident occurred.
"When a non-resident motorist
enters a state with such a law ' the
statement continued, "he automatl
cally appoints the commlslsoner of
motor vehicles as his lawful attorney
authorizing him to accept service of
process In a civil liability suit. Should
the motorist cause an accident and
then leave the state, the process is
served on the commissioner ana thi

"Should he fall to respond to the
suit, and Judgment be returned
against him, the court of the state

ANCIENT PEAR TREES
SAN RAFAEL. Cal. (UP) Two
pear treea, planted more than a cen
tury ago by Franciscan fathers, glv
every indication of again bearing
their annual crop this summer. For
half a doaen years past, the "crop"
of the ancient gnarled tree has
not exceeded from four to six pears
each year.
One of the trees still stands on
the snot where it was originally
planted In 1618. presumably by
Father Vendru Fortunl, one of the

Archangel. The second one was trans
planted from It original orchard
