HOTEL MEDFORD
A ehef of International reputation
has been secured to head the kitchen
staff of the Hotel Medford, according
to an announcement Saturday by P.
G. Denson, manager of the hotel,
William Curtis, who has catered to
the tastes of exacting diners In Eur
ope, the Orient and Philippine la
lands as well as Important cities of
the United States, now presides over
the new staff of the Medford and
the management will especially feat
ure the new cuisine In the Hote'
Med ford's dining room and coffee
shop.
Medford people who dined at Talt's
smart San Francisco restaurant a
few years ago enjoyed Mr. Curtis'
foods as the noted chef had charge
of the Talt kitchen for several years.
Before the opening of the Olympla
hotel In Seattle, Curtla was hetd
chef for the Hotel Washington In
that city, after which he was associ
ated with Seattle's fashionable Rain
ler club. He was also ehef In the
Georgia Hotel of Vancouver, B. O.
Among the members of the new
kitchen staff at the Medford Hotel
are John Wells, second cook; Arthur
Mcshon, assistant; Charles Webber,
baker a former member of the Pal
ace Hotel staff In San Francisco;
Wade Baugh, In charge of the pantry,
and J. O. Hicks, receiving clerk.
"We have added the eewest, up-to-the-minute
facilities to our kitch
en equipment, including a new type
broiler," Manager Denson said yes
terday. "With a new, capable staff
under William Curtis and a atrlct
policy of serving only the finest of
foods, we feel sure that the peoplt
of southern Oregon will be delighted
with the cuisine of our dining room

Approximately thirty membera of
the Jackson eounty 4-H leaders
aoclatlon held their regular meting
at the courthouse yesterday. Mr.
Richard Joy, president of the asso
ciation, presided and led the discis
sion.
Tentative plana for raising achol
arshlps for the 4-H club slimmer
school to be held In Corvallla In
June, and a county-wide 4-H yell
and song contest were formulated
by the leaders. It Is planned to hold
district song and yell eonteetaf at
which time all clubs In that dis
trict - will compete. The winners or
these district contests will compete
at the Jackson county 4-H club pic
nic to be held during the summer.
Short Informal discussions fea
tured the remaining part of the ses
sion, during which the leaders told
of their problems and other leaders
offered auggestlons for solving them.
Following the 'business session the
group adjourned to Valentine's where
luncheon was served. Entertainment
was provided by Jack Drager and
Reginald Filer, who played selections
on the guitar and harmonica. Barny
Abrama, former 4-H club member
and prestidigitator, entertained the
group with sleight of band tricks,
proving to the audience that the
"Hand la quicker than the eye,"
Judge Earl B. Day gave the main
addresa at the luncheon at which
time Mr. Day pointed out the great
value of 4-H club work In dlreotlng
the correct use of leisure time. He
also suggested that club membera be
encouraged to think mora for them
selves along lines that will make
them be of aervlca to the county.

Study Club
Continuing a aeries of talks on In
ternational and foreign affairs, cover
ing a period of several years. Mrs. J.
F. Lawrence presented a discussion
of "Vital European Problems" at the
meeting of the Wednesday Study
club on March 4th.
Through her real Interest In and
her careful study of the subject, Mrs.
Lawrence was able to speak on Its
many phases. Enlightening views of
the political and economic status of
many of the European countrle were
represented.
Mrs. J. R. Orews review of "Grand
Tour" by Patrick Balfour was very
enjoyable. In his book, Mr. Balfour
tells about a motor Journey from
England to India, traveling through
Damascus, Bagdad and many other
interesting places. The book la valu
able aa a travel study and welt worth
reading.
The president, Mrs. B. O. Harding,
presided at the short business meet,
lng preceding the program.
The next meeting of the club will
be held on March 18th.
