Be Reviewed at Centen
nial Exposition From
June 6 to November 29
' DALLAS, (UP) Texaa. In cele
brating Its 100th anniversary with
the Texas centennial exposition June
6 through Novemuer 20, wilt observe
a unique historical record the only
state Jn the Union ever to attain
recognition of a republic, boasting
niore flags than any other state, and
having had more capitals.
The colorful background, engender
ed by the change of capital cities,
national flags and varying political
fortunes, makea a, glamorous pattern
for the Centennial celebration.

velopment from a wilderness to a
great commonwealth, will fly over
the exposition wounds.
Hall of State Unlit
' In a Texas Hall of State, now being
constructed on the exposition
grounds at a cost of $1 GOO .000, will
be housed relics of those old days
when Texana could, never be quite
sure where the capital would be when
they awoke In the morning.
In the past 350 years, six flags,
France, Spain, Mexico, Republic of
Texas, United States, and the Con
fedracy, have flown over Texas, and
he capital has been moved 15 times,
although four cities have appeared in
the capital list twice.
The flags of Spain and the United
States have flown over the "Lone
Star" state on two different occa

The Spanish banner was raised In
Texas before ttiat of the French and
later, when Rene Robert Oavaller,
Sleur de la Salle, and his followers
deserted the short-lived French col
ony on Matagorda Bay, Spain re
' possessed Texas.
The flag of the United States first
flew over Texas when the state Joined
the union, ceasing to be a republic.
Then, Texas became one of the Con
federate states, later rejoining the
union.
-Texas, alone In the union, became
a member of the United States after
being established as an Independent
republic, whose sovereignty was
recognized by Or eat Britain, the
United States, France and other
powers.
Contracted With California
Although California set up a re
public before the Mexican war. it
never attained foreign governmental
recognition, nor did It function as an
Individual political entity, and Its
"republic" lasted but a few weeks.
Vermont, before the Boston tea
party and the revolution, declared It
self a republic and refused to pay
taxes to New York, then head of the
British colonial government. How
ever, the formation of the Continen
tal Congress, the Declaration of In
dependence and other major events
of the period obscured the Vermont
republic claim, and It became one of
the 18 states.
Should the founders of the "Lone
Star" state be able to revisit their
old haunts today, they would find
them revered ahrtnea to the fires of
patriotism and Independence that
brought forth Texaa.
Visitors to the centennial wilt see
some of the largest mural decorations
ever painted in the United States.

Eugene Savage, New York artist,
has been commissioned to execute
t!ic murals, which will decorate the
1,000,000 Hall of State building. The
paintings will cover 6.000 square feet
of wall space, and the two largest
will measure 31 by 80 feet each.
Munils to Trace History
The murals will depict the history
of Texaa from the coming of the first
white man to the present, showing
development of the region under the
six flags.
Bronee statues of six outstanding
heroes of colonial days and the Texas
reputolo also will be cast for use In
the Hall of State building. The sta
tues, each of which will stand about
8 feet tall, will be made of Pompeo
Copplnt, sculptor, who divides his
time between New York and San An
tonio. 1
The six heroes chosen as most
worthy of honor positions at the
centennial are Stephen F. Austin,
"Father of Texaa"; Sam Houston,
who served as governor of Tennessee
and United States senator from that
state, then came to Texas to direct
Its revolutionary armies and stayed
to n pitiuiit if iihe republic; gov
ernor of the state of Texas, and
United States senator from hut
adopted home; William B. Travis
commander of the troops who lost
their Uvea defending the Alamo;
Mlrabeau Lamar, a president of the
republic; and Generals Thomas J.
Rusk and Jamca W. Fannin.

WASHINGTON. Feb. 37. Sev
enteen states which have enacted so
cial security legislation with federal
statutes are receiving match money
for monthly allowances ranging from
10 to 30 to the needy aged.
Plans submitted by a number of
other states have not yet been ap
proved, and benefits are withheld.
Oregon Is among states not yet re
ceiving benefits.

LOS A NOBLES, Feb. 28.

was slightly Injured In an automobile
accident today.
Her husband. Homer Samuels, the
pianist, was also hurt.
Mme. Oalll-Curcl was treated at
Hollywood emergency hospital for a
bruised right eye and a sprained
bunk.
PROMOTER HELD
ON STOCK DEAL
PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. M.(AP)
John A. Charlesworth, 47, Portland
and Seattle promoter and builder,
was ordered detained here today it
request of Seattle authorities. They
aald he was to be questioned In
connection with a stock or bond
deal.
Charlesworth, then chairman ol
the board of the "Pacific National
Syndicate," was accused here In 1932
of selling accumulative certificates
of the syndicate without a permit
from the atate corporation commie- I
slon. He was convicted and sen
tenced to prison, but the courts
few months later reversed the con
viction. The state supreme court
refused to entertain a motion for
rehearing.
When Charlesworth was arrestees
today by federal agents snd Patrol
men Hall and Cameron, a suit for
70,000 against him and a number
of stockholders of his Insolvent
Pacific National Syndicate was being
heard In circuit court.
