LITTLE ASTEROID
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Feb. 28. (AP)
A little object discovered In the
sky two weeks ago by Dr. E. Delport
of Belgium is an asteroid, astrono
mers said today. It came nearer to
earth than any other asteroid in the
history of astronomy.
Dr. Hnrlow Shapley. director of the
Harvard college observatory, an
nounced nothing quite like the little
asteroid ever had bren observed be
fore. He said gravitational disturb
ance of its orbit by four planets, in
cluding the earth and the moon,
might some day cause the asteroid
to be ejected from the planetary sys
tem. It might even collide with one
of the other planets, he said, al
though he added that possibility was
remote.
An asteroid is a small planet. This
one was only about a third of mile
in diameter, about the size of a small
mountain. Astronomers estimated It
was nearest earth on February 7
several days before It was discovered
when It was about 1,250.000 to 1.

10 PRESENT PLAY
BY LOCAL WRITER
A one-act play for public presen
tation was adopted at a special meet
ing last night of the Young Demo
cratic Club of Jackson County.
A tentative cast was selected nd
rehearsals launched immediately af
ter the meeting so that the play
may be produced on Thursday, March
12. Place of presentation was to 'oe
chosen this week.
The play la the work of Mrs. Ed
ward C. Kelly, former Medford Jour
nalist who now resides In Portland
where her husband, son of Col. and
Mrs. E. E. Kelly. Is counsel to PWA
It was written for production by a
Portland Democratic club but it was
such a success that It was adopted
officially by the national Democratic
committee and la now being pre
sented In all parts of the country.
Mrs. Kelly, now Tisiting here, will
direct rehearsals and production. The
skit presents accompllahments of the
New Deal In dramatic form.
The tentative cast includes Jack
Murray, Joe Winkler, Bob Kelly. Jean
Fabrlck, Helen Bell. Moore Hamilton,
Paul Luy, Jack Marshall. Marjorle
Kelly, Ray Schumacher and K. O.
Narregan.
At the business meeting Miss
Fahrlck was appointed chairman of
the membership committee and Mr.
Winkler was chosen statistician tor
the publicity committee.
Mr. Murray, new president, pre
sided for the first time since hie
election. He announced that young
Democrats of Josephine county plsn
ned to organize a elub In Grants
Pass March S and asked that mem
bers of the Jackson county organiza
tion arrange to attend.
There are 4,600,000 acres of land In
Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado. Texas

HIGHER LAST YEAR
WASHINGTON. Feb. 38. An
agricultural department report said
today 1935 livestock price were the
highest In three years.
Price last year, the department
said, were 30 per cent above those in
1034. 61 per cent higher than in in
1933. and 60 per cent Above the 1932
level.
All livestock commodities except
wool, the department reported, sold
higher in 1935 than in the preceding
year. Meat animals were up 68 per
cent; chicken and tgfis up 35 pr
ccui; work animals up 15 per cent
and products up 13 per cent. Wool
prices were down 11 per cent.
Outstanding gains were in the
prices of hogs, the average farm prtoe
being $8.36 per 100 pounds liw
weight, compared with 14.14 In 1034.
The department attributed tills ad
vance chiefly to "abnormally low
market supplies of hogs."
