cording to a research pamphlet pub
lished by the University of Califor
nia. To laat full-blooded male mem
ber of the Slnkyone tribe having died
In 1929 the university ha undertak
en to establish and preserve a com
plote history of the customs and be
liefs of the tribe.
What remalna of the original Slnky
one tribe now live In southern Hum
boldt and northwestern Mendocino
counties In California. They are so
Intermixed, however, with other tribe
that tlwlr customs and belief are
rapidly dying out.
The Slnkyones never permitted a
mother-in-law to address her sbn-ln-law
except through the Intermediary
of a third person.
Likewise when the mother-in-law
nan occasion w pass iier uu-m-..-,
she was required to cover her face
with her buckskin blanket.
As regards the father-in-law, tne
customs were somewhat modified. He
and his daughter-in-law were per
mitted to address each other directly,
provided they did so In t serious
manner and with a sufficient degree
of slowness to emphasis the solem
nity of the occasion.
One of th other taboos ot th tribe
prevented brother and slater from
addressing each other directly unless
It wa atrlctly necessary. Even on
those occasions they were required to
speak slowly and seriously. Laughter
or jokes were never permitted.
Another requirement of th tribe
provided that every good Slnkyone
remain quiet in speech and manner
for five days after the eirtn or a
child. Any departure brought bad
luck.
Only men were considered worthy
of coolilng fresh meat. The Slnkyone
hunters were as skilled in tna nuri

bow and arrow. Both methods war
used for th felling of Urge bird and
animals,
Extreme originality wa developed in
the art of fishing. By emerging th
root of a poisoned plant In th water
they stupefied th fish and then
caught them by hand at their leisure.

the girl usually wa reared by the
creditor' wife to marriageable age,
when she became th bride of bar
