Chapter Nine.
PICNIC
rtTTHEN you're quite finished e
' pressing your Inferiority com'
plei," said Frankle coldly, "perhaps
you'll try netting out of the bunker
with a niblick Instead of a putter.'
"Hare I oh, damn!" He replaced
the putterln his bag and took out
the niblick'. Frankle watched with
malicious satisfaction as he hacked
at tie ball live times In succession,
Clouds of sand rose round them.
"Your bole." aald Bobby, picking
up the ball.
"I think It Is," said Frankle. "And
that gives me the match."
"Shall we play the byet"
"No. I don't think so. I've rot a
lot to do."
"Of course. I suppose yon have.'
They walked together in silence
to the clubhouse.
"Well." said Frankle, holding out
ber hand. "Qood-bye, my dear. It'a
been too marvellous to have you to
make use of while I've been down
here. See something of you again,
perhaps, when I've nothing better
to do."
"Look here, Frankle"
"Perhaps you'll condescend to
come to my coster party. 1 believe
you can get pearl buttons quite
cheaply at Woolworth'l."
"Frankle"
His words were drowned In the
noise of the Bentleys engine which
Frankle had Just started. She drove
away with an airy wave of her hand,
"Damn!" said Bobby In a heart
felt tone.
Frankle, he considered, bad be
haved outrageously. Perhaps he
badn't put things very tactfully, but
dash It all, what be bad said was
true enough. Perhaps, though, be
shouldn't have put It Into words.
The next three days seemed In
terminably long. The Vicar had a
ore throat which necessitated his
peaking In a whisper when he spoke
at all. He spoke very little and waa
obviously bearing hla fourth son's
presence as a Christian should.
Once or twice he quoted Shakes
peare on how sharper than a ser
pent'a tooth, etc
On Saturday Bobby felt that be
could bear the strain of borne life
no longer. He got Mrs. Roberta,
who with her husband "ran" the
Vicarage, to give him a packet of
aandwlcbes, and supplementing this
with a bottle of beer which be
bought In Marchbolt be set off for a
olltary picnic. ' i
He had missed Frankle abomln.
ably these ast few days. These
older people were the limit. They
barped on things so.
Bobby stretched himself out on a
brackeny bank and debated with
himself whether be should eat his
lunch first and go to sleep after
wards, or sleep Bret and eat after
wards. While he waa cogitating, the
matter was settled for him by his
falling asleep without noticing It.
When be awoke It was half-past
three! Bobby grinned ss be thought
how his father would disapprove of
this way of spending a day. A good
walk across country twelve miles
or so that waa tna kind of thing
that healthy young 'man should
do. It led Inevitably to that famous
remark, "And now, 1 think, I've
earned my lunch."
"Idiotic." thought Bobby. "Why
earn lunch by doing a lot of walking
you don't particularly want to dot
What's the merit In It T If you en
toy t, (hen It's pure self-indulgence,
and If you don't enjoy It you're a
too) to do It."
Whereupon he tell to upon his un
earned lunch and ate It with gusto.
A'ltb a sigh of satisfaction be opened
the bottle of beer. Unusually bitter
beer, but decidedly refreshing. . . .
He lay back again, bavlng tossed
the empty beer-bottle Into a clump
3f heather.
He felt rather god-Ilka lounging
'bore. The world was st his feet A
phrase. But a good phrase. He could
do anything anything If he tried!
Plans of great splendor and daring
Initiative (lashed through his mind.
Then he grew sleepy again. Leth
argy atole over blm.
He slept . . .

All this In the "bright" manual
usual with nursing homes.
Gosh!" said Bobby, very much
surprised. "If It Isn't Frankle!"
Hullo, Bobby. I've brought the
usual flowers. Rather a graveyard
suggestion about them, but th
choice waa limited."
Oh, Lady Frances," said thi
nurse, "they're lovely. I'll put them
Into water."
She left the room.
Frankle sat down In an obvloui
"visitor's" chair. "Well, Bobby," sbi
said. "What's all this?"
You may well aak." said Bobby

It's true, Isn't It, nurse?" de

'That's enough," said Frankle

Jolly few have been poisoned

Dash It all, you're not sufficient!

Pretty sickening for the people
who poisoned you," -said Frankle.
I know. Waate of perfectly goot

Yes. You see, someone found mi

Frankle hastily.
At flrt they had the Idea thai

Someone must have put the stuff

"That's It. I remember that the
top wasn't still sticking proporly."
Frankle nodded thoughtfully.
Well," she said, "It shows that
what I said In tbe train that day
s quite right."
"What did you Bay?"
That that man Prltchard had
been pushed over the cliff."
That wasn't In the trsln. You
said that at the station.'
Bobby feebly.
"Same thing."
But why"
Darling It's obvious. Why
should anyone want to put you out

Sir Thomas Oresham, wealthy Lon
don merchant, set a record for high
priced drinks when he toasted Quetu
Elizabeth with a 76,000 glans of
wine; a gloss or wine, to be exact,
with a little grit In the bottom. Tho
grit was what was left of a costly
pearl, one for which Sir Thomas him
self reftiMKl $76,000 In cash.
This display of throwing money
away waa put on by the merchant as
an answer to a Spanish ambassador
who had boasted, In the queen's pres
ence, of the lavlshnesa of his king's
court. Sir Thomas, coming to the de
fense of hla queen, told the Spanish
ambasMdor that Queen Eltzabetn's
subjects sometimes spent as much on
a single meal In honor of their queen
as was spent In a day for the upkeep
of the entire Spanish court.
To prove hts point, Sir Thomas In
vited the ambassador to dinner. When
wine was served, he pulled a (75.000
pearl from hts pocket, ground It to
dust, dumped the dust In a glass of
wine and drank It as a toast to the
queen.
Before the Invention of blotting
paper, fine sand was used to hasten
drying of Ink. It was sprinkled light
ly over the Ink, then blown or shaken
off. When the United States Senate

first met. each desk was furnished
with a supply of sand In a shaker
much like a salt shaker. This method
of blotting is still employed In the
Senate today. '
