CHOCOLATE
WHEN little Johnny spends hi3 penny for chocolate candy
he receives for that small sum a sweet that only the rich
est king of a hundred years ago could indulge.
Cocoa came to the world with the discovery of Mexico
Cortez found it the royal drink of Montezuma and liked it so well
that he took a few cocoa beans back to Spain in 1536.
The dark brown beans were so valuable they were used as
money and only the richest nobles could afford the beverage made
from crushed cocoa beans, vanilla and spices.
Cocoa was practically unknown in the U. S. until after 1812
when the price of cocoa beans, for the first time was as low as $2.00
a pound. ...
In 1828 chocolate was invented in Holland. Then began the ex
pansion of its use as food From a world production of a few
thousand pounds a hundred years ago we now find more than
600,000 tons needed for the world's supply. Over 150,000 tons are
consumed annually in the IT. S. in 5c candy bars. Nearly as much
more is used for cocoa chocolate coating and icing and better
chocolate for home use.
On this the 400th anniversary of the introduction of chocolate
to the white race we pay tribute t0 this great American food by of
