UTOKFTELD, Aria. (UP) World
wide changes In cotton culture may
follow Introduction of mechanical
plckera, the inventors of the first
successful machine picker predict
here.
While s model of their machine
was making s test run, John and
Mack Rust, of Memphis, Tenn.. tore-
oast virtual elimination ot hand har
vesting, and suggested possible chanc
es In the world's cotton trade.
Machine picking costs can be cut
to 91 an acre, or about one-fifth the
price or hand work," John Rust, 43,
elder of the two brother-Inventors,
declared.
"Picking machines are going to
cause lots of changes. Maybe two mil.
lion people or more who now work as
hand ploksr. will have to find soma- .
thing else to do go on the land, or
be put to work In faotorlea.
Nearby, the first successful test in
history ot a machine picker on Irri
gated cotton progressed evenly.
A steady stream of cotton was
squirting from the end of a delivery
pipe Into ft huge white sack that
hung from one aide of the mechan
ical picker. Picking was accompanied
by ft humming sound not unlike tha
of a vacuum cleaner although prin
ciples of the two devices are entirely
different. "
The Rust machine has moistened
whirling spindles, like extra-long ten
penny nails, which are pressed against
the entire plant, and when withdrawn
bring the cotton with them. Appar
ently, there Is no Injury to the plant -or
to Immature bolls.
"A Brazil official told us they, could
produce cotton for 8 oent. a pound
If they had picking machines," the
elder brother continued. "An Argen
tine man .aid they could market cot
ton for fl cents."
The United States Is not neoeasar-
lly barred from future cotton export,
however, h. lugge.ted, adding that
"some type of protection for the home
market, with the price at 19 cents ft
pound might be worked out. We
wouldn't be averse to paying our share
of s tax to aupport a pro-rats market
agreement, if the industry comes to
that.
Russia has made ft bid for aid la
solving her cotton plckltve problems,
It was reported. The president of the
Amtorg Trading company, New York
agents of the Soviet government, re
portedly Inspected the machine. The
model operating In the teet here had
been "wanted pretty bad" by the
oompany. the elder brother said.
eventually, the Inventors, who con
trol the oompany which plana large-
scale production, expect to export
machines to all parts of the world.
To date they have mad. little or no
effort to find buyers, they said.
Moat local cotton men seemed en
thusiastic over possibilities of the ma
chine. Some estimated, however, that
about 10 per cent ol the cotton was
knocked on the ground by the trac
tor which preceded the picker.
The speed of picking Is multiplied
twenty-fold or more. The harveated
cotton Is cleaner, and the rowa, tol- .
lowing two trips by the machine like
wise ar cleaner, than when hand
picking Is used.
