of America's Independent retailera,
they indicated today on the eve of
their 3-week semi-annual convention
beginning Monday.
Answering questionnaires circu
lated by the American Retailers'
association which sought to ascer
tain points of greatest concern, most
merchants checked the question :
"How can I nwt the competition
of chain stores and stores In nearby
larger cities?"
Scott R. De Kins, secretary of the
association, announced 41 states
probably would be represented.
The questlonnatrea also d lack Bed
the merchants' great Interest In the
best method of attracting trade. An
other puzzler waa how to handle re
turn of damaged apparel the cus
tomer did not give proper wear.
Other problems which will be dis
cussed snd argued during the con
ventlon Incl-.tde ways to offset "loss
leaders" by competitors; the? value
of speclsl sales; how to cash in
on PWA and WPA money and what
methods to use to retain old cus
tomers and gain new onea.
Village store keepers Indicated In
replies to the questionnaire that
mall order houses constituted as
serious a problem for them as chain
ntnrfn did for the city retailer.
"What can w do," they aaked,
"when mall order houses offer prices
at the merchants' wholesale cost?"
