FRESNO. Cal.. Jan. 25. (UP) A
shadow from California's early days,
the vigilante justice of the frontier.
spurred Fresno county authorities to
day toward a speedy trial and an
equally speedy punishment for 31-year-old
Elton Stone, confessed slayer
of Mary Stammer.
District Attorney Dan Conway and
Sheriff George Overholt hoped to still
sentiment for mob action by starting
Stone toward the gallows within two
weeks for the killing of a 14-year-old
school girl whwe family was among
Fresno's most prominent.
The threat of a lynching party was
still under the surface. Conway and
Overholt discounted Its possibility.
Responsible cltlsens also believed
Fresno citizens would let the law take
its course. .
