Ueued today by Ernest M. Weit, re
cruiting officer for thle district:
"From the flret day of his entry
into the naval aemce, the recruit la
under constant modlcal observation,
commencing with hli preliminary
physical examination at th recruit
ing station for his entry Into the
service, where bla psy ileal fitness 1b
determined and his previous medical
history la noted. He la next re-examined
upon his arrival at the train
ing station, to Insure that no dis
qualifying defects have been overlook
ed at the recruiting station.
"Only those who can meet a high
physical standard are accepted.' It
then becomes the duty of the medical
department to take such measures as
are designed to Increase his physical
fitness snd promote general health
Many small defects, not of sufficient
consequence to disqualify for enlist
ment, are remedied. Particular at
tention Is given to the teeth, which
are charted, defects noted and repairs
made. A prophylactic cleaning la also
done.
For a period of three weeks after
arrival the man Is retained In a de
tention unit where he Is observed
frr the appearance of any commiml- i
cable diseases with which he may
have become Infected prior to his ar
rival. During this period he is vac
cinated against smallpox and typhoid
fever. He Is also Indoctrinated with
the fact that he la to report to the
dispensary If he la 111 or Injured In
any way and that It Is essential for
the prevention of disease to report
even the most minor ailments. He Is
taught personal hygiene and oral
prophylaxis by a series of lectures by
the medical and dental officers.
"Throughout his entire service; his
health Is carefully guarded by,. the
medical department. Before engaging
In athletics be Is examined to deter
mine if sports might be Injurious to
his health. Before being assigned to
any apeclal duties, auch as aeronaut
ics, diving, submarine duty, etc., for
which special physical qualifications
are required, be la carefully exam
ined. .
'In addition to the frequent phy
sical examinations for the control of
communicable diseases, he Is exam
ined on every transfer and before be
ing discharged,
"A complete record of all these ex
aminations Is kept. Skilled doctors,
surgeons, dentists, pharmacists,
nurses and hospital corps men, aboard
ship and at hospitals ashore, are con
stantly on duty, not only to care for
but to prevent sickness and epi

turkey growers, members of the Ore
gon Turkey Growers, Inc., have re
ceived a total of 1308.3011.50 for tur
keys shipped to Thanksgiving and
Christmas markets, according to an
announcement today by Mrs. Chris
tina Micelll, secretary-treasurer of
the co-operative.

for all birds shipped during No
vember and December, the Novem
ber pools bringing a total of M8.-
388 SS net to the growers, while
checks ara now being delivered (or
the December pool, which netted
164.911.18. These payment were
made after the association had de
ducted packing, handling and ad
ministrative charges.
Crash ' Fatal.

death for Robert B. Atkinson, Kelly
field flying cadet, when hi plan
hit the top of a 178-foot tank toon
after the takeoff. The 38-year-old
son of Mr. and Mr. H. R. Atkinson
of Reno, Nev., died late yesterday
of a fractured skull several hours
after the crash.
