MEXICO, D. P. ( AP ) Women are
being enlisted aa first line troop In
the government's fight to combat the
use of alcohol In Mexico.
Under direction of the federal de
partment of health, women employee
of government offices are being or
ganized Into "committees of antt-
alcoholic action." Already more than
000 auch committees are aiding In
the campaign, the ultimate aim of
which Is aald by President Cardenas
to be "the total prohibition of the
sale and manufacture of all In toil
cante."
Prizes for Dry Slogans
Thus far the .drive haa been con
fined mostly to propaganda of an
educational nature by means of radio
broadcasts, conference, meetings,
posters and pamphlets.
In thla phase of the activities wo
men will conduct a national prize
contest to select slogans dramatizing
the "evila of alcohol." Thla year they
will organize a national convention
to study means of combatting the
uae of alcoholic drinks.
A million pesos haa been appropri
ated by the health department for
uae In the campaign this year.
Many Saloons Closed
In addition to the propaganda
campaign, the department ta taking
other action to bring an Immediate
decrease In alcoholic consumption.
Some 400 saloons in the capital
there is one to every 400 Inhabitants
by official count have been closed
because of proximity to schools and
working centers.
A check of licenses la being con
ducted and places lacking the proper
permits or found to be selling bad
liquor are shut Immediately.
The National Railways cooperated
In the campaign by forbidding the
sale of any drinks except beer In sta
tions and on trains. On some gov
ernment jobs, workers are paid on
Monday Instead of Saturday "so they
won't spend their wages on drinks."
Special attention haa been given to
the army, which Is now "ninety per
cent moralized." according to Dr. and
General Jose Slurob, Jead of the
health department.

method of mining field assay devel
oped at the mining school recently
started at Grant Pass has been
named the "Charlie Martin" method.
Governor Charles H. Martin said here
today upon hia return from an In
spection of the school yesterday.
The governor proudly displayed
gold nugget stick pin which had been
presented to him yesterday by the
i.io? enrolled students at the new
school. He smiled when ha stated
they called the new assay method the
"Charlie Martin" rather than "Char
les Martin."
Forty per cent of the etudents at
the school are practical miners who
sre attending to learn the latest
methoda In the school, the governor
said. All phases of mining is being
taught under supervision of Karl
Ladewlg and 13 assistants, aided by
experts irom the university of Ore,
gon and the state college.
The school was started with 125.000
obtained from the federal works pro.
gress administration, under the spon
sorship of the governor and the state
vocational educational department.
This sum. the governor said, would
last until summer, but additional
funds will be sought from the gov,
emment.
Nevada and Arizona have written
to the Oregon mining school asking
the method used In starting the
classes and stated they were watch
ing the development with keen In
terest. The executive reported en
thusiasm in the enterprise following
nis inspection.
