PARIS. (UP) Convinced that tt
day U not far off when aircraft will
compete with ocean liners In oarrylng
mailt and passereers regularly across
the North Atlantic, four nations this
year will speed their preparations for
entering In this unknown field.
The United states. Prance. Great
Britain and Germany, each of the
first three with Its favorite airplane
types and chosen routes, and the
last named with airships, will .try to
clinch their positions In the coming
year. If not actually running regu
lar air routes within the next 13
months, they will at least have the
most Important part of their prelimi
nary study done, aoutes will be
mapped, organization arrangements
will be under way, and perhaps even
plans for hangars, seaplane landing
places and other ground work will be
accomplished.

North Atlantic seaplane line, and
England appears In third place. Ger

For a regular Atlantlo route Prance,
experienced In ocean traffic as a re
sult of the highly successful South
Atlantlo mall line from Dakar, Sene
gal, to Natal, Brazil, places the most
stock tn huge seaplanes like the fa
mous 37-ton Lieutenant Paris. Be
sides these, several of which are pro
jected, the air ministry and commer
cial experts are studying an aerial
giant that would weigh 60 tons and
easily carry more than 100 persons.
Favors Azores Ronte
The French feel that the most
feasible route Is the southernmost,
namely, by way of the Azores and
Bermuda, and they are losing no time
In making a detailed study of it.
Lieutenant Nomy, who was named by
the air ministry to head a apeclal
mission .to the Azores, has made ex
tensive reconnaissance flights over
the Islands, noting the best places for
landings. Early In the spring several
other experts will proceed to the
Azores, where they will carry the
study further and map the necessary
ground work.
Later. If Brltlan I willing, nego
tiations will be opened either to ob
tain permission for ' French line to
use aviation facilities at Bermuda, or
for Joint FYs n co-British exploitation.
Whlls th United States devoted
most of Its attention to the Pacific
during 1936. ths Atlantlo was not for
gotten. The remarkable performance
of planes like the Glenn Martin
China Clipper and the four-motored
Sikorsky 8-42 s have definitely been
borne In mind with an eye to estab
lishing an air link with Europe,
Non-Stop Flights Possible
But ths most outstanding American
project as viewed from abroad la the

lieved, make regular North Atlantic
non-stop flight. Non-stop flight

ths French planes would make with
stops at the Azores and Bermuda, but
they would be much faster. The

British are understood to be plan
ning to test big seaplanes of their
own soon. Meanwhile they are study
ing the problem of North Atlantic
transportation with a view to form
ing a pool wi st either the United
States or Prance. Imperial Airways
is negotiating with Pan-American Air
ways for the possible formation, of a
pool.
Design Novel Plana
While all the countries Interested
have airplane types of their own with
which they are experimenting, the
Italians have come forward with a
machine which has aroused consider
able attention In Franco and England
aa a possible trans-oceanic candidate.
Thla la the four-motored land plane
Plaggto, which can carry 15 passen
gers at great speed and, what la most
important, can float.
Germany, at the beginning at least,
Is certain to use Zeppelins for North
Atlantic crossings. The unparalleled
success of the Graf Zeppelin will
make the Germans continue to use
this type craft. The Graf Itself is
getting old, but next spring the "130"
will be ready, and plans are under
way for it to make 13 flights a year
to the' United States, using the air
ports of Miami and Lake hurst In
America and Frledrlchsbafen and Se
ville In Europe.
The French, Incidentally, are In
terested In this German dirigible ser
vice because at Orly Mrdrome near
Paris they have some- of ths best fa
cilities for Zeppelins In tbe world.
The suggestion Is being made that
some sort of agreement for the "ISO''
to land at Orly be reached.

When Mr. rorman gradkiated from
Repton school In Drroyahlne. England,
90 years ago, he Joined the Reptonlan
aooletjr. Mot long afterward he emi
grated to the United States and as
years ago came to southern Oregon
where he has since resided.
Mr. Form an though little more
about the Reptonlan society until
thla week when he received an air
nail lettr from Robert W. Barnes.
Westlanda, Kenya colony, British East
Africa, who graduated from the school
about 23 years after Mr. Porman.
The letter related that Mr. Barnes
had come across Mr. Formsn's name
on the Reptonlan society roster and
was motivated In writing by a de
sire to establish contact with a fra
ternal brother In Oregon. He aald
then was only one other Reptonlan
living In this state, and he resides
!n Portland.
Mr. Barnes stated that he was In
tbe business of raising Pyre thrums, a
flower used In making Insecticide. He
was Interested In procuring an effici
ent drier fo ths flowers, and as ne
had read a great deal about Oregon
fruit and drying methods, he thought
Mr. Porman mlgni be able to obtain
helpful Information from the state
agricultural oollege and horticultur
ists In this state He specified the
kind of drier he was seeking and
a&ked Mr. Porman If he would assist
In gathering helpful Information.
Mr. Porman appeared delighted at
hearing from a fellow Reptonlan In
so distant a land, and has already be
gun to collect the Information Mr.
Barnes seeks.
