VETS HOLD
INSTALLATION OF
OFFICERS, FEAST
The regular time for the monthly
meeting of our camp fell on the even
ing of January 1, New Year's evening.
That waa too much even for veterans
to stand so the meeting waa held
January 3 at Medford armory.
The first duty of the evening was
to devote fitting attention to a
chicken dinner. About fifty persona
ate, including approximately fifteen
invited guests. These were heads or
prominent members of other local
veteran and patriotic organizations.
Everything seemed to be going fin
with the dinner and everyone present
was agreeing that whatever faults or
weaknesses might be charged against
Spanish War Veterans, one thing they
could never be accused of was marry
ing poor cooks. Unfortunately, Just
at this point In the course of tha
dinner, the camp waa astounded and
horrified when five of Its members
were detected sitting at the tabid re
served for guests.
After the dinner the camp prompt
ly proceeded to court-martial the of
fenders. By a stroke of remarkable
luck for a Medford gathering, there
happened to be plenty of lawyers
present and the prosecution did not
have to lag. When confronted by
the Judge advocate, the accused all
pleaded ((Kilty and none offered any
excuse worth hearing. People who
get Into acraes In Medford seem to
know of ways of avoiding publicity.
For reasons not to be stated, this
correspondent la not going to tell
anything more about this Incident.
Finally, the auxiliary first and af
terward the camp win able to get to
the business for which they came)
there and installed their officers,
Mrs. Newman waa Installing officer
for the auxiliary. Their ceremony, as
always, waa colorful, musical and in
spiring. Their officers for the year
are headed by Mrs. Joe E. Wood,
president. Comrade Joe E. Wood Is
the new commander of the camp.
The retiring president of the auxil
iary was Mrs. Lellt Paxson, the re
tiring camp commander Nicholas S.
Young.
In due time, not before dinner, l
waa revealed that every guest who
was fed was roqulred to make a
speech. They could not welch so all
did their turns, and msde out all
right, too.
A feature of the meeting was what
would be called In church "congre
gational singing. " Considering the
eating that had been done, the sing
ing was decidedly better than moat
observers would have predicted.
If any of our guests left hoping
that this was the last time they
would ever get mixed up with the
Spanish War gang, we can at least
testify chat we failed to hear them
say so. W. H. PA ink.
