Rogue river reached Its greatest :
height and volume of Vow yesterday I

been swollen the past lew days by I
heavy rains and snows In the valley 1
and along Its headwaters. i
At 11 a. m. yesterday the amount
of water flowing past the Gold Ray j
station of the power company was i
measured as 1S.100 cubic feet a sec- t
ond. This compares with th eprevi- t
oua record volume oi 17.600 second '
feet measured exactly three years ago 1
on January 3, 1933, and with the all
time record of 01,600 feet registered
February SI, 1027, the time of the
big flood.
The Rogue also reached Its greatest
height at 11 a. m. yesterday since !
January 2, 1933. The peak recorded
at Oold Ray dam westerday was 7.6
feet as compared with 8 5 feet Janu- ;
ary 2, 1933, and 24.8 feet, the all-time
high registered February 21, 1927.
Between fi o'clock Wednesday even- i
lng and 8 o'clot'i yesterday morning
1.99 Inches of rain fell at Fish Lake,
source of the irrigation water supply ;
of the Medford district, according to
a report received by the local Med- ,
ford district office. It was one of
the heaviest sustained rains in the j
records of the irrigation. During the '
same period a heavy rain fell through-
out the entire mountainous area of
eastern Jackson county.
Snow depth at Fish Lake, before
the rain, measured 20 Inches, and af-
terward showed a depth of 8 Inches, j
The caretaker reported tbat none of ;
the snow had melted, zbut had been '
packed and soaked and settled by the
moisture.
The weather bureau's forecast was :
for occasional rain tonight and to
morrow, with slightly warmer tern- i
peratures this evening. The valley
Is still under the Influence of a low
preassure area centered off Puget
Sound and conditions will continue
unsettled until the low passes to the j
eastward or Is dissipated, the bureau ,
explained. j
Piers Swept Away
GRANTS PASS, Jan. 3. (API After
reaching the highest mark here in
three years yesterday, Rogue river was
receding today. At 3 p. m. Thursday
the stream was' 8.6 feet above last
summer's low mark.
At Its paek yesterday, the river
swept fishing piers from their moor
ings. In about 15 minutes one man
saw five piers float down straem.
A cool drizzle this morning sent
temperatures down from 50 to 38 de
grees in about one hour.

rare collection of prehistoric rel
ics to C. A. Kllndt of The Dalles,
who took au vantage of the un
precedented low statie of the river
to die; for artifacts.
He announced the discovery ot
bowl?, pestles and food grinding
equipment believed to have been
left by a rare that antedated
the Indians which abounded in
this area at the coming: of the
lewis and Clerk expedition.
The name prehUtoric people are
accredited with leaving the cryp
tic writings found on cliffs along
the Columbia river In this district
