TOO MUCH TALK FROM
TEACHERS SAYS PREXY:
STSATTLE, Dec. 37. (AP) Assert
ing teachers "talk too much." Dr.
h. P. Slpg. president of the Univer
sity of Washington, today announced
a system by which each student
will be permitted to take one or
his subjects without attending class,
If his professor so rules.
The student would do his work
alone, and make reports to his In
structor In that subject, Dr. Sleg
snld. He said the system will not
need be adopted by the entire fac
ulty and Its use will depend on in
dividual instructors' wishes.
"Students must learn to think;
for themselves," the president eMd
"Under the present system, the In
structor talks too much, regulates
too much and ts too suspicious of
students. Under a 'conference' sys
tem, students would 'crack the
whip.
"I do not mean that all classes
are bad and should be done away
with. Rather, tnoy are the most
practical and efficient method of
Imparting knowledge to a group.
"But there Is & self-starting side
of education, too, and here (classes
are In the way, for there are aome
things a student should get for
himself, and not In a mob."
