"Little Nell's" rescue of her pro
ject, an Infant In a long shawl, from
a blaclc-mustached villain, with the
aid of a worthy yokel In overalls was
one of the highlights of an evening
of feminine fun and satire, with
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt as hos
tess. Even the "cabinet wives' turned ac
tresses for the night, costuming, as
did Mrs. Roosevelt herself. In evening
cowns of the Victorian era, which
happened to be horse-and-buggy
days, and appearing together In a
short skit. What they said was ruled
not for publication.
It was all part of the "Gridiron
Widows" party, which Mrs. Roosevelt
started giving the very first time that
Secretary Frances Perkins didn't get
Invited to the semi-annual newspa
permen's gridiron dinner because she
was.a woman and it was a stag party.
Mrs. Roosevelt's guest list took In
all the high women officials of the
government: the stay-at-home wives
of the gridiron club members; and
the working newspaper women.
A supper, served In the State din
Ing room and adjoining parlors, fol
lowed the show.
HER LAST REWARD
Jennie 3. Thatcher, a resident of
Talent for the last 11 years, paed
away at a local hospital Saturday
afternoon, after a brief Illness of two
weeks. Born Jennie Ackcrman, April
6, 1852 at Battle Creek, Michigan, she
waa 82 years. 8 month and 8 daya at
the time of her passing. Jennie That
oner was a pioneer of the weBt, com
ing to southern Oregon from Port
land where she had lived for seven
years, homestead ing In North Dakota
In. her early years Bhe was married
to Avery Thatcher in the year 1874,
h having preceded In death In 1895.
In the years spent near Talent she
has made many friends, whom will
sadden to hear of her passing.
She leaves besides her friends and
neighbors, two sons, Will Thatcher of
Talent and C. A. Thatcher of Med
ford. also four (rrandchlldren.
Funeral services- will be conducted
from the Perl funeral home. Monday
afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Reverend
W. R. Balrd officiating. Interment In
the Stearns cemetery at Talent.
MURDER, SUICIDE
DEATHS REVEALED

The body of Mrs. 0. Blggar, with a
bullet hole In the head, was found
try police today In an automobile
owned by 0. H. Wookey, 50, parked
In bushes on the outskirts of Van
couver. The body of Wookey was
found earlier on Kltsllano beach, with
a bullet In the forehead and a pistol
alongside.
The police suspect murder and sui
cide. Mrs. B!ggar was a friend of the
Wookey family. The couple was last
seen alive Friday night when they
-visited the home of Mrs. Blggar's
daughter, Mrs. C. Thompson.

POISONED COFFEE

A charge of attempted murder was
lodged against plump Mrs. Helen
Sperlco. 20. after Sheriff's Captain
Harry Brewster said she confessed
she placed ground glass In her hus
band's coffee because "he was mean
to me and our little girl."
"So I went out on the porch In
the morning and pounded the salt
cellar to pieces. I put the glass into
his coffee, but liiost of It went into
the sugar bowl. He threw the cof
fee out when our little girl told
him about It and began beating me
again."

m. today to complete Its flight
from Wake Island on the next to
the last leg of an air mail flight
to Manila.
The four - motored plane sped
across the ocean from Wake In 9
hours, 53 minutes. A tall wind
helped Capt. J. H. Tilton and his
crew on their 1450-mile Journey.
The plane will leave here early
Monday (about noon Sunday P.
MS. T.) for Manila. After a short
stay there It will retrace Its route
across the ocean to Its base at
Alameda, Cal.
