An effort was made In picking the
s.11 -star selections to choose thoie, men
who were oonAltnt throughout the
year, rather than those who flared
Into prominence In one engftgement
only to slump the next week. Also
considered was the effect each player
had on his team mates, the "fire1
that he contributed to the team. The
selection of Hess, of Aahland. came
more aa the result of his consistent
rencralahlp, hia ability to keep his
team matea at a fighting pitch, than
his ability to block or carry the ball
although he was better In this respect
than the average.
Within a short time certificate
eh owing their selection to the Ail
Star group will be mailed to each of
the players chosen. These certificates,
are small enough so that they may
fit Into tf bill-fold.

KEZAR STADIUM. San Francisco.
Dec. 14. (UP) Standing off the
challenge of a power-packed St.
Mary's football team, University of
California at Los Angelea closed its
greatest season in history with an
upset 13 to 7 victory today.
Bitterly fought from start to fin
ish, the game ended . In a wild
flurry as an Irate fan, angry with
repeated penalties against the Gaels,
accosted Referee Nibs Price and
planted a right to the law. J. Ble-
wett, field Judge, rushed In and
halted the battle.
Taking advantage of ragged play
by the Moraga squad, the Bruins
took the ball In the second quarter
on the Gaels' IB-yard line. Charles
Cheshire, U. C. L. A. all-Amerlcan
halfback candldnte, was spilled for
a 10-yard loss. Two plays later left
end Bob Schroeder snared a beaut
iful pasa In the clear and stepped
over the goal line for a gain of
20 yards and a touchdown. Chesh
ire's try for the extra point was
wide.
St. Mary's staged an 80-yard
touchdown drive In the first five
minutes of the third quarter with '
quarterback Lou Ferry plunging i
over from the one-foot line to
score. He also made good the kick
for extra point.
A moment later and the Gaels
were dewn to the Bruin 6-yard
stripe. Fullback Floyd Maxham
started over for a goal, but fum
bled to lose the ball and give the
Bruins first down on their own 20.
From that point the U. C. L. A.
tenm. co-holder with Stanford and
California of the Pacific coast con
ference champlcnshlp. moved out to
the Gaels 42-yard line before the
quarter ended, taking the ball after
an exchange of kicks. Cheshire
started from his own 46 and ram
bled 28 yards In a sparkling run
tnat saw him swlvellng past a futile
company of .tacklers.
Substitute quarterback Bob Wil
liams faded back on a delayed buck.
dropped in behind a charging line
of Interferers and swept clean
around the left stde of the Bt.
Mary's line for a 12-yard run and
touchdown. He kicked the extra
point.

12 TO 7
MEMORIAL COLISEUM, Dec. 14
(UP) The University of Pitts
burgh drove over two touchdowns
and presented a stalwart defense In
the pinches to score a 12 to 7 vic
tory over University of Southern
California in an intersectlonal clash
here today.
Approximately 45.000 fans saw
Pitt even up the series with U. S. C.
The win by the eastern club gave
each university two victories.
Pitts' touchdowns came in the
first and third periods. Frank Pat
rick, sophomore fullback, drove for
a scant foot for the first tally. The
second came after Pitt advanced
the ball 81 yards, with Hubert
Randour, senior halfback, doing
most of the work. He contributed
two runs of 20 and 24 yards, re
spectively, during the march. His
touchdown slash was good for seven
yards. Patrick missed two place
kicks after the touchdowns.
The Trojan touchdown was a
spectacular last-minute affair. U.
S. C. was on the Pitt 39 yard line
after a punt when Davy Davis shot
a 20-yard pass to William Galsford,
end. Galsford gathered In the ball
and loped 19 yards through the
Pitt secondary for the score. Suth
erland converted a place kick.

TO GIVE FIRST AID
A doctor will be In readiness at
the Armory tomorrow night when
Ken Hoi Us, meanest of all mean
wrestlers ever to perform here, and
Marine Bob Kennaston of Gold Hill
tangle In a grudge match hailed as
the wildest bout ver scheduled in
the city.
With no hold but the strangle
barred, x kicking and slugging and
other arts usually associated only
with logging camp scuffles will be
permlssable, and Promoter Mack
Llllard has deemed It advisable to
have a medical man in attendance
in case of serious injury, he an
nounced last night.
Llllard has already announced that
there will be officers In attendance
on the grapplers, and no out-of-the- i
ring scuffling will be tolerated. The i
wrestlers will be led directly to their I
posts, and after each bout they will
be led back to their dressing rooms
to prevent a recurrence of the riot
which broke out two weeks, ago when
Hollls ran amok.
In the middle event "Killer" Shi
kuma, giant Japanese Jtu Jitsu ex
pert, will meet the limber legged
Texan. Les Wolfe, for two out ot
three falls. A flip of a coin will
decide whether Jlu or catch-as-catch-can
will be used for the first
fall, with the next fall to be In the
opposite manner. The man taking
his fall (if there are two) in the
shortest time. Is to have the chotce
as to which style will be used In the
final frame.
An unusual thing about Jlu Jltsu
wrestling la the fact that pinning
a man's shoulders to the mat does
not constitute a fall, even though
the shoulders might be pinned there
half the night. The only way to
get a fall In Jlu Is to render the
opponent unconscious or make him
pat the mat.
The opening bout, under the Aus
tralian system of six 10-mlnute
rounds, will feature Rex Mobley.
Alabama strong arm expert, against
Frankie Peck, in another grudge j
battle. Last week Peck won a close 1
match over Mobley, and the Ala-
bama pride has demanded a re
turn bout, promising to win handily.
There will be no raise In prices,
Llllard has announced. I

Louis, the new toast of Harlem, was
being hailed as a second Jack Demp

everybody except the old Manassa
Mauler himself.
Still the Idol of fight fans, Jack
stopped pumping hands In bis Eighth
avenue restaurant long enough to
give an authoritative lowdown on the
Brown Bomber, whose fists are mak
ing ring history every time he climbs
through the ropes.
Dempsey freely admits Louts Is the
outstanding heavyweight prospect In
years, but he goes a bit slow on the
super-man stuff.
"We're not going to know If Louis
is really great until we throw him
In the ring with somebody who will
do a little fighting himself," he said.
Jack didn't hesitate a minute when
asked whether Max Schmellng or
James J. Braddock has the best
chance of trimming Louis.
Braddock unquestionably," h e
said.
"I'm not telling you Braddock could
lick Joe, but he has a better chance
than Schmellng."
