ADVENTURE
"pERRY had been around. Nearlnj
twenty-eight, he had before he
waa twenty encircled moat of the
globe.
He had seen native gangs aweat
their hearts out to raise a railroad
trestle In the Andes. His life he'd
once entrusted to a battered Ford
car. fleeing across a desert three
Jumps and a wheeie ahead of a yell
ing throng of marauding Riffs In
Morocco.
He bad witnessed the death of bis
father's best friend and one of the
most able and undaunted englneera
that ever battled the lorces of Na
ture to a standstill, Sam Cotton,
knifed by a hent-and drink-maddened
peon In Mexico.
Terry Willett lounged at the bar,
And to begin with, as Is most
logical that he, like everything else,
should have a beginning, he was
born In China,
It had been Cotton's death that
shocked tight-mouthed, rangy Law
rence Willett Into the man he had
been before Vio Willett had smiled
and died, while a Chinese maidser
vant rose from her knees with a
email bundle ot humanity that Its
father could not see.
He became the maestro for his
son waving the baton of forgetful
ness of a mass of auburn batr, a pair
ot One grey-green eyes, a light laugh,
by spurning an executive's chair and
leaving behlna him bridges, dama,
and roads In all parts ot the world,
but never Memory.
How could be, when the boy who
kept pace with him had Vic's reddish-golden
hair and her eyes!
And then
Sam Colton had been sent back to
the Slates tor burial. The friend of
both, a second fathor to Torry.
"Terry," Lawrence Willett aald
abruptly, "let's go home."
But It waa too late. Terry had
rolled a clgarot and stuck It between
thin even Hps,
"Home?" be said Ironically, his
lean tanned fnce darkening. "You
can head for the Statea If you want
to, Dad. but I'm going to stick arcund
and see that the louse who knlfod
Sam gets all that's coming to him."
And he had. That hnd been five
years ago.

THE "Collseo" wss crowded to
night. Terry Willett lounged at
the bar and moodily surveyed his
surroundings, a clttnrot drooping
from a comer ot his n.outh. one
hand idly toying with a glass before
him.
The place lett him cold. The men
there were a conglomeration of tor
elgners. natives, tailors, and touith
rawboned fellows from the engine
rooms of the ships In the harbor,
dnnclng. drinking, singing lustily,
while a women orchestra played
from a balcony overlooking the floor
and scores of other women circu
lated around among the tables, dodg
ing away from grasping hands, smil
ing at Insults.

The crowd left him alone. After
ose or two had approached blin, the)
realized the tall hard figure at the
bar was there to drink and nothlns
else. Proplonoire liquor helped to
speed the time to' his departure.
He felt like getting royally plas
tered, but that wouldn't be so good
Ot course. It would be nice to fade
Into oblivion and wake up lust before
the Dutch steamer cleared for the
capital he wouldn't have to stand
here and think how his father had
looked when he left.
The scene stayed with him even
yet the tall man at the water's
edge beside the launch arguing with
him, ordering him to get action from
the coffee company's head office In
the capital, the sun rising behind
that Jungle world, bis father's eyes
Sure, Dad waa the boss, but It bad
been bard to leava him there at that
leaden river with the sulky Chalkla
all around him.
Abruptly be had another drink.
Speed up time, try to forget this in
action. Again, he dallied with the
Idea of getting drunk. No, might get
Into a tangle with the police and end
up being held Incommunicado tor
three days like the time he and
Bucky Corrlgan bad landed in Jail
after that All Saint's Day riot In
Juarez.
Grand fight that. He wondered
what had happened to Corrlgan.
Hadn't seen him for a year not
since that PonteclUes-Junrez road
Job.
A MAN came In from the street
wobbling a little. Terry looked
at him dispassionately. Odds that
he'd fall down the flight of stain
from the door. As soon as he saw thai
the newcomer waa either Engllab
or American he called all beta off.
No sense wishing hard luck to
fellow like that.
The man 'gave an absurd Impres
sion of youth why? God knows
He didn't look young, his hair wai
tossed and rumpled, hla lie pulled
loose from bis throat, hla none-too-clean
white ducks were bunched and
bunched about bis form.
Maybe it was his queer triumphant
grin as he successfully completed
the descent of the stalra; maybe he'd
wagered on the chance ot breaking
his neck too. That grin started Ter
ry wondering. Something clicked In
bis brain that brief-appearing grin
seemed familiar.
But who could grlu In Proplo
noire? he disappeared Into the
crowd and Terry forgot about him.
Minutes passed. Others came In.
He had another drink and wished
something would happen. The music
seemed to be getting louder and fun.
nler. The hum of conversation, the
walling of the current singer, the
tread ot feet, the clouds of smoke
swirled about his head. He decided
to get out of there and Into the cool
night air.
And then there waa the sound ot
a shuffle ot feet, loud voices raised
In altercation, and the sound ot a
body hitting the floor. Terry put off
his departure to clamber on top of
the bar and view with Interested
eyes the source of the disturbance.
A heavy, drunken Portuguese had
lurched against the table of the man
with the familiar grin. Even as
Terry saw him rising to his feet and
remonstrating with the Portuguese
he tumbled around In his mind for
a clue to thst elusive Identity But
now the Portuguese had slapped
him and Terry abruptly quit fum
bling. (Copyright. IJJI. by David Qarthl
